Posted: 6/1/07 at 11:22amYes, it isn't going to make any money in America. And the way it has been receieved by international press when it opened in Toronto is not worth the risk for a broadway audience. Also, there there is no where to put it. The only theatre that would work for it is the Gershwin which has Wicked and that won't change anytime soon.

Winston you also said that Mary Poppins wasn't going anywhere when i posted a few months ago it was set to close in 2008 to tour lol
No one can ever predict what a show will or wont do, Evita was set for broadway but now wont happen, same with jerry springer etc
It will all depend on its Critical and Commercial success in the UK and the show is still in previews so we cant really judge yet.
My OPINION is that it wont move to broadway if RECENT ticket sales are anything to go by.

ok people will most likely yell at me for saying this but i would love to see the show from a technical point of view. now i think taking the lord of the rings books and turning them into a musical if just stupid but the tech looks amazing!
please dont kill me

Posted: 6/1/07 at 12:04pmI am not being a negative nelly when I say that honestly I feel it will never make it to Broadway. I live close to Toronto and the show was a critical and financial disaster. By the end no one was paying full price for any ticket and although a technical marvel, which some people enjoyed and were amazed by, there was no long term stability for this show. I was surprised the UK picked it up. The word of mouth would be so bad in NY it would be dead in the water. People wont pay 110 dollars for amazing set pieces. Plus, the show was over 3 hours and many found it mind numbing-the story was uneven and could be hard to follow for those not familiar with the work.

I saw it last year. I certainly could appreciate the work, but the whole thing was just an overwrought mess. I will be astounded if it has a long run in London.
It's also an exhausting show, physically and mentally. I've talked to many of the actors who came out of the Toronto production. Many HATED doing it by the end and one had a brief period where he confessed he has lost his love of theatre. I'm thankful to hear he has returned to the theatre and is enjoying himself again!

songanddnaceman,
The reason why I said I thouht Poppins was gonig to be playing for a while longer is because I was always under the impression tha the show was doing pretty well over there. And as oppose to Broadway west end doesn't pubilsh its numbers. And as a rule, I NEVER believe someone who says "I know" or "I have a source." For all I know thay can just be making it up and I don't know if it is real or not.
That being said, Rings lost A TON of money in Toronto. The city of Toronto was banking on the fact that it would be a success and have more people want to come to Toronto. In fact, they even usaed some tax money to back the show. And a slew of international critics came to see the show and it got mixed to crappy reviews.
The fact that it is even playing in London is a real head scratcher for me. I cannot see this makking any money and that it will be a multimillion dollar flop there just lke it was in toronto.

The London version saved multi-millions because they used the set and most costumes from Toronto.
And Kevinoes I heard the same things from Toronto cast and crew members. Towards the end of the run they couldn't wait to get out of their contracts.
