does anyone else think this is just the weirdest material for a musical? I really can't imagine the appeal. I'm not an LOTR fan...but the show will need to appeal to more than the die-hard fans in order to be successful...
Legally Blonde musical will have a workshop relatively soon with Laura Bell Bundy as Elle Woods and the choreography is set to be done by Jerry Mitchell
LOTR isnt a musical .. it has MUSIC ... but no singing ..
I'm pretty sure there is singing...but very little, if any, by the main characters.
One would think there would be more singing than you guys are thinking of, 'cuz most, if not all of the performers come from a musical theater background. After all, Brent Carver is playing Gandalf!
well the website mentions it has a brilliant score, so i'd assume it was a musical. That'd be a little strange just to have singers in this if it wasnt a musical.
Yeah, one would think it would be at least more than "very little" as tshell said. Defying - go to www.lotr.com it is a musical, or at least will be.

It is a musical, and there is singing. However the approach taken varies drastically from that of traditional musical. The songs are intergrated into the story in the same way they are intergrated into the books. The producers claim that the music is being used to celebrate a culture with a remarakable story-telling tradition. Anyone who has read the book knows that singing plays a large part in Tolkien's storytelling. That is how the production intends to untilize music. As well as a great deal of underscoring. Also, the score is very very unique. Being percussion drivin, it has a sense of tribalness that has rarely been untilized on the stage. Regradless of the aprehension of many theatre goers, the show is shaping out to be quite breathtaking both visually and musically. I think it will be a pleasent surprise for everyone.
nicely said! I hope it comes closer to me, because i cant make it to Toronto
While I think the idea for the music is an excellent one (I, for one, was mad about the songlessness in the movie...among other things), I still think there's just WAY to much material for it to stay true to the book. And that's all there is too it.
VERY curious about this. Will withold judgement for now until I can get some feedback here.
