Why did Little Women stay in previews for 7 weeks, most show are in previews for half that time?

I know that Sutton Foster (Jo) was out previews for a bit, and I believe that Jenny Powers (Meg) went on for her. I think there was also some debate and controversy over whether or not Jo would actually wear pants in that time period.
