This is the age appropriate information for London's Avenue Q... they didn't specifically ban under 12s in New York did they ? I can't remember seeing too many younger people when I saw it there.
This is the first time I can remember a musical banning any age group although Mary Poppins had guideline age of over 7 I think...
"ADDITIONAL INFORMATION CHILDREN UNDER 12 NOT PERMITTED Adults love AVENUE Q, but they seem a little, er, fuzzy on whether it's appropriate for kids. We'll try to clear that up. AVENUE Q is great for teenagers because it's about real life. It may not be appropriate for young children because AVENUE Q addresses issues like sex, drinking, and surfing the web for porn. It's hard to say what exact age is right to see AVENUE Q - parents should use their discretion based on the maturity level of their children. But we promise you this - if you DO bring your teenagers to AVENUE Q, they'll think you're really cool."

They told me at the Golden Theatre's box office last year that 14 was their suggested minimum age. Which I appreciated hearing, by the way. Otherwise I would have assumed those cuddly muppets were rated G.
As a parent, I'd much prefer to be offered advice and reasons why, rather than being told what ages they allow. Then again, I think there's merit to the no-4-and-under policy in force at some Broadway houses, which I suspect is done less for the welfare of the child or the adult next to them, and more for the comfort of the adults sitting in front and behind them.

We had SRO tickets and the 2 people in front of us...were 2 boys who were probably 8-10 years old--they didn't have theater etiquette--so maybe we should leave the little kids at home or teach them proper theater etiquette before coming. Sorry, it was just a little bit frustrating.
