I second Follies or Ragtime. You also might like Little Shop of Horrors.
Depending on the Borders, you might be able to dig up the original Apple Tree recoding (which i recently found at a Barnes and Noble) and I absolutly love it... Highly recomended...
Check your e-mail.
Once on this Island, Ragtime, West Side Story, Pippin, Hair . . .
Judging from your list, you have a lot of work to do!
You need the classics. West Side Story, Gypsy, Damn Yankees, Sweet Charity, The King and I, The Sound of Music, Chicago, Cabaret, Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, Sweeney Todd. and the list continues....
Get Sondheim. Into the Woods is a good place to start, and maybe Sweeney Todd or Follies.
Also, there are some classics you should look into. West Side Story is fantastic, and Kiss Me Kate is always fun. Also don't count out Rodgers or Hammerstein (I'm loving the London Revival Cast CD right now) or Kander and Ebb (Cabaret or Chicago are amazing). Also check out Gypsy, the original cast album is one of may favorites.

I would suggest starting with one or two recordings from several of "the greats". This will provide you with a good framework of what true musical theatre is. My choices would be:
Sondheim - Into The Woods, Company
Ahrens/Flaherty - Ragtime
Webber - Evita
Schwartz - Pippin
Loesser - Guys And Dolls
Kander/Ebb - Cabaret, Chicago
Rogers/Hammerstein - Sound Of Music, South Pacific
Boublil/Schonberg - Les Miserables
That should be a good start.

That was my question, suzycat.
My school wants to promote reading

...buy buying you CD's??

They promote reading by taking you to a book store?
How exactly does that promote reading?
That promotes some quality goofing off.
Silent reading time combined with a library trip seems a bit more productive.....
I say go to the theater section of the DVDs and see if they have Into the Woods. A great show with an amazing cast giving brilliant performances. Or go to the movie musicals DVD section and get something great - Cabaret, Fiddler, Gypsy (with Bette Midler), Dolly, Singin' In the Rain, The Sound of Music, Funny Girl... the list goes on forever!
CD's? I agree with Fiyero... get a few of the greats. I repeat his list and and a few thoughts:
Sondheim - Into The Woods (ORIGINAL Broadway cast), Company (original or current revival cast)
Ahrens/Flaherty - Ragtime
Webber - Evita (American Premier cast), ...Superstar (original concept)
Schwartz - Pippin
Kander/Ebb - Cabaret (original cast), Chicago (original cast)
Boublil/Schonberg - Les Miserables (10th Anniversary Concert)
Styne - Gypsy (original with Ethel Merman AND the Angela Lansbury recordings)
I took away some of the true classics. You MUST learn them, but I think that should be the next step after you get a few of the above. Get musical theater (its language and its voice) into your head first and then get into some of the heavier stuff. Plus, I suggested a lot of original casts over revivals so you can get truly great performances. For example, I LOVE the revival recording of Chicago, but there was no one more legendary than Gwen Verdon, Chita Rivera, and Jerry Orbach in those roles. Anway, good luck!
And boy I WISH I'd've gotten to go shopping when I was in school!
Any collection without FORUM is simply beneath mention.
And if you're going after classics, remember that shows were written before 1960 and good ones at that. Gershwin. Porter. Coward. Without these giants we wouldnt *have* a Broadway.
i didnt want to bring this up but I am in a emotional support school so they want us out in the community and borders is one of the places I voted for to go to

I would also reccomend some Herman. I think La Cage Aux Folles and Mack and Mabel are two of his best OCR's, but there's always Hello Dolly!
into the woods
kiss of the spider women
I would higly recomend THE WIZ

Listen, if you want a recording that you won't regret...get A CLASS ACT. Every theatre lover should have this in their collection and it is for theatre lovers. I don't know of any other recording that is so fantastic. You can probably get it for about $15 to $20. It is worth every penney.
Lerner & Loewe are classics as well, how about My Fair Lady or Camelot?
i'm assuming you mean CDs then and not librettos/vocal selections?
i would have to go for a mix of classic and new;
spring awakening for something new and very listenable-to!
sweeney todd
into the woods
the last five years
songs for a new world
tick tick boom
porgy and bess
show boat
west side story
carousel
spelling bee
miss saigon
les mis
my fair lady
