The OBC recordings is one of my favorites. I think its one of Jerry Herman's best scores!! What seems to be the problem with the show. A local high school did it a few years ago (in an half hour competition cut) and I was impressed. Could the show work in a community theatre?? Would appreciate ALL THOUGHTS and COMMENTS. I really love the score!!!

The problem with the show is that it falls apart in Act II with a rapid succession of scenes and events that are too superficial (and downbeat) to make any impression. The other problem is that, ultimately, the show isn't ABOUT anything--it's exactly what it is and no more.
That said, I agree with you that, with the exception of the TEA PARTY in DEAR WORLD, it's the best thing Herman ever wrote. And, of course, it can work in community theatre--I did it nearly thirty years ago. But because the original production was a failure, the show has no 'marquee value' and hence not an easy sell to audiences.
