I just saw the film for the first time and at the end I thought that it would be a terrific stage play (non-musical). Then I saw in the end credits that it was written by John Patrick Shanley, which probably has something to do with it.

Then I vaguely remember that there already exists a plan to bring it to the stage, according to MGMonSTAGE.com.

Does anyone know who is writing the music? I think it has potential!

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

I have gone on about how appropriate this would be for a Bdway musical adaptation. Unfortunately Mr. Shanley has a bit of a rep for being a pitbull in what he perceives as a lack of attention to the words of the writer.(HIM) I can understand a creator wanting to protect his work but his rep has him insisting on "Ummms" for "ahhs" in his dialogue. Collaboration ( w a lyricist and composer ) involves compromise.

Henry Krieger was writing the score.

A reading of the first act was done years ago. Idina Menzel played Loretta, and although the material was extremely well received, everyone involved was never able to sync their schedules enough for development to continue.

To my knowledge, the project has been permanently shelved.

Shanley and Krieger went on to collaborate on ROMANTIC POETRY, which was also initially conceived as a vehicle for Menzel.

Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.

Oh wow. That's a shame.

Idina Menzel seems TOTALLY wrong for the part, however.
