I have to completely disagree with your posting about Juliet Prowse being a terrible Mame. That is so not true.
I did "Mame" with Juliet in 1994 here in Los Angeles. You've never met a more kind, charming, caring and loving woman in your life. Her Mame was just that........so elegant, charming, caring and loving. Perhaps, she wasn't the greatest singer. It didn't matter.......she did it, and she did the role brilliantly! And, of course, since it's Juliet Prowse, all of her gowns were designed to show off her amazing figure......and those legs!!!!!
It was very, very sad when she passed away 10 years ago. Very sad indeed.
Unfortunately....(sp?), any actress who plays Mame will always be very carefully watched by the theatre goer and compared to Roz R, Angela L or Lucy. That's the reality.

Juliet Prowse was the first Mame I ever saw on stage. I had seen her do Phyllis in a producition of FOLLIES and had been impressed.
I wish I had - as an audience member- the same experience you had with Prowes as a colleague. But see came off as lifeless and wooden.
The next worse Mame I saw was Michelle Lee in a concert version. She was pretty one-note and spent most of the evening devoted to being worshipped rather than delivering a developed character.

Lucy.....
(I know she wasn't onstage, but no one was ever anywhere near as bad...)

Janet Blair in a bus and truck that played Philly for a couple of weeks. Sleepytime Mame. This was maybe Spring 1969.
Vera was none other than Stritch herself!

"When I did "Mame" with Juliet, Gretchen Wyler was Vera."
She also played Vera to Julia's Mame in an episode of Designing Women titled "Mamed."
"In Oz, the verb is douchifizzation." PRS

Posted: 7/6/06 at 3:50pmI was in a pretty bad production in Albuquerque, New Mexico with the Civic Light Opera. We were even calling it Maimed while we were performing in it. Still, it was a fun show to do (if not so much fun to watch).

Posted: 7/6/06 at 3:59pmHow was Dixie Carter's Mame? The actual production, not on Designing Women -- in which they miraculously managed to do the show all the way up to "Bosom Buddies" without their passed-out Vera sans incident.
