To me Mama Rose is one of the most iconic roles ever in any musical. It has been portrayed by such amazing performers as Patti Lupone and Bernadette Peters. Who do you want to see be Mama Rose?
I would love a Sutton Foster Mama Rose.

Nitpicky but the role is Madame Rose, not Mama Rose. Read te script..she is called Mama or Rose (and goes by the name Madame Rose) but is never ever called "Mama Rose."
Why does this topic keep coming up? The last revival (Lupone) is about as definitive as we will likely see. The fact that we had two productions of GYPSY on Broadway within 10 years was an anomaly.Since both revivals lost money it is not likely there will be another Broadway revival anytime soon.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!

The question of GYPSY revival has been discussed here many times. Some seem to think that because there were two revivals within the last 10 years it is a given GYPSY will get revived every 5 years or so.

Can I threadjack this thread into a FAVORITE LINES FROM GYPSY thread?

TESSIE: Cut the ballet. It stinks anyway!
===
TESSIE: Take it from me, to be a stripper, all you need to have is no talent.
MAZEPPA: You'll pardon me, but to have no talent is not enough.
Rose: If I could've been, I would've been. And that's show business.
Herbie: Rose, did it ever occur to you there might be somebody in this world who doesn't like Chinese food?

I don't see why Gypsy shouldn't be done as often as Carmen or La Traviata. Classic musicals are in many ways like the great successes of opera. I'd like to see Tracey Ullman as, and here I'll use the name she is usually and aptly called (although she may not be called it in the show), Mama Rose.
favorite line:
Rose to Herbie:"You go to hell!"
ROSE: You wanna know WHY? You wanna know WHY I did it? Because I was born too soon and started too late, that’s why! With what I have in me...I could’ve been better than any of you! What I got in me--what I’ve been HOLDING DOWN inside of me--ohhhhhh, if I ever let it out, there wouldn’t be signs BIG enough! There wouldn’t be lights BRIGHT enough! Here she is, boys! Here she is world! Here's ROSE!

The LuPone revival cannot be called "definitive" when they were too cheap to spring for an actual live dog and lamb.
Laura Benanti even referred to her as Mama Rose in her Tony acceptance speech.

I believe Ms Benanti also referred to Arthur Laurents as nice or generous. Clearly she can't be trusted.

Joey... did you just (partially) transcribe Bette Midler's rendition of the monologue?
No, I just typed what the voices inside my head told me to type.
In many interviews Ethel Merman referred to the character as Mama Rose. That's good enough for me.

Favorite line of all time- "It's money, Momma."

Bernadette Peters and Angela Lansbury both refer (or at least did, at some point) to the character as Mama Rose in their bios.
Let's discuss the controversy over whether it's "Mama" or "Momma."

"Herbie: Rose, did it ever occur to you there might be somebody in this world who doesn't like Chinese food?"
Miss LuPone answered that question in a way that made me guffaw, PalJoey can attest.
