Apparently she wants to follow in the footsteps of Nicole Kidman, Madonna and Minnie Driver and be in a play in London in a comedy that she thinks has potential. Can she act?

I think one needs to check the reviews for her one and only film to date for that answer . Wasn't it titled Glitter?

Glitter was not her "one and only film to date" Kec, she was very well received for a movie called "Wisegirls". How much "worse" an actress could she be than Madonna? Anyone remember "Speed the Plow"? Her acting (if you can call it that), was painful.

I stand corrected . My apologies. I hadn't heard about Wisegirls, only Glitter, and what I heard about that was not good. I can make no comment on Madonna as a stage actress, as I haven't seen her in Speed the Plow or anything else.

It was like a bad female version of Goodfella's.
Now I live on Staten Island, which is where "Wisegirls" was set and filmed, and it is sadly pretty accurate.
Mira Sorvino and Mariah Carey do very well considering the bad script. There is waayyy too much cursing in that movie though, which just goes to prove that whoever wrote the script should be shot. I don't mind some cursing to accentuate the personality of a character; but when every other word out of there mouths is "f**k", then that's just bad writing.

Mariah has the potential to be a really good actress, if she gets the right role/script. But, I think she is much better suited for movies than live theatre.

Awww, you got out at the right time. LOL it is very overcrowded here but it's nice enough. Not too far from Manhattan, still part of NYC while having a suburban feel.

If I were to go back to NY to live, I'd definitely choose S.I. over any place else, even though I hate seeing some of the buildings they call houses in some of the areas of the Island these days...

No one, but no one has a right to discuss Mariah's performance in Glitter unless he or she has actually managed to sit through the movie. It's a right you earn, like a Purple Heart.

I honestly didn't think Mariah herself was bad in Glitter....I just think it was a terrible, cheesy movie. I agree with the idea of her potentially being a good actress if she got the right role, and a movie whose script isn't garbage. We shall see.

I agree Balladeer, the movie was terrible BUT Carey was watchable, unlike say Britney Spears in Crossroads. Now that was not only a terrible movie but her performance, well let's just say, it was like watching paint dry. BAD! I know you all love Madonna in Evita but IMO, the only singer that made a successful crossover to that *sort* of film (in more sober days obviously), was Whitney Houston in The Bodyguard.

Al Dente, I totally agree with you on Britney in Crossroads, and I wasn't a big fan of Madonna in Evita. Being that the role is a singing role primarily anyway, she really didn't impress me that much. I did enjoy her in Dick Tracy, for what it's worth. The sad thing is, I would have loved to see Whitney Houston do a Broadway show. If she didn't have all these problems that she has now, she would have been an interesting Witch in Into the Woods, I always thought. However, if she did try to do a Broadway show, she would have needed some coaching - all the riffling, and vocal gymnastics she usually does would not be appropriate. Ah well.

It was the one thing that put a smile on me and my friends' faces in the aftermath of 9/11.

I remember one review of Glitter that I think hit the nail on the head…even though the reviewer felt the need to slam another performer to get his point across (I’m paraphrasing):

“There might be some acting ability there but Carey looks throughout, like a dear caught in headlights. Unlike the kamikaze, takes no prisoners, self confidence Madonna shows on screen even when she's failing, Carey does seem to be unsure and uncomfortable of herself and that makes one feel sorry for her and the whole mess”.

I do think there might be some acting talent there..

Should she do Shaw and Ibsen, NO....!

But there's gotta be something for her......
