Marshall, Griffin & Doyle Set as ENCORES! Directors

Posted: 9/21/10 at 9:56amI'm interested to see what these three directors will do, but most especially Doyle. I also wonder if Kathleen Marshall is interested in reuniting Kelli O'Hara and Harry Connick, Jr. I mean, there already was a rumor that they would be starring in Bells Are Ringing. (I admit I'd be disappointed if that was the case, though)

I am a sometime admirer of John Doyle's work but he seems a strange fit for Charley's Aunt.
Interesting that Gary Griffin gets the "serious" one, Lost in the Stars. I wonder what the thinking was - or did he just make a good case for his vision of the piece?

Posted: 9/21/10 at 11:25amHasn't Griffin already done some of the "serious" Encores shows? I know he directed Music in the Air (which I really enjoyed) and A Tree Grows in Brooklyn.

Ahhhhhhhhhhh.
That is all.

I sure hope they made Doyle sign a pledge: NO MORE ACTORS PLAYING INSTRUMENTS. EVER!
Seriously, does the man have a light enough touch to stage "Once in Love With Amy"?

There isn't time enough in the Encores! rehearsal process for something like that, so I doubt you need to worry. Nevermind that as I'm sure you know, part of the point OF Encores! is to do these shows with a full orchestra -- particularly their orchestra.
(Edited after the post below to clarify that there's not time enough for him to implement something like that conceptually, but for a scene as part of the plot is a different story.)
I actually don't know very much about this show, but am curious to see where he'll go with it.

The big Act I production number in WHERE'S CHARLEY is "New Ashmolean Marching Society and Students' Conservatory Band." Wow - what an opportunity for Doyle to have the cast marching around while playing instruments - and it actually make sense!
Also - maybe after THE COLOR PUTPLE, Griffin is known as "the white guy who can direct shows about black people."

Well, God forbid he do that, then, even if it makes sense!
But in seriousness -- I edited my other post given that.

Posted: 9/22/10 at 11:17amI haven't either, but I've always liked the music. I won't be in town for that one, and I'm disappointed to miss it!
