"Staying in the decade that existed only so that VH1 could later do specials, there's an openly gay band member and a few other homo moments in the otherwise not so heteroflexible The Wedding Singer, which is the second big musical this year about New Jersey, guaranteeing it at least 8 million ticket buyers. The show is MICHAEL JACKSON thin but more amiable than a K-Tel commercial on Ecstasy. Act I is bouncy and big-haired, with a refreshing minimum of Broadway-style cheesiness (until the finale). Act II stumbles a bit once the lead stops his wedding singing and the show dabbles more in romantic impasses and icky sentiment, but it gets back on its dancing feet, and by the end you're willing to let likable performers like STEPHEN LYNCH, KEVIN CAHOON, and RITA GARDNER sing at your own wedding. It's FELICIA FINLEY, though, who steals the whole thing in just two raucous scenes as the jilting bride. If there's a God, Finley should be nominated along with another fab FELICIA— The Color Purple's Ms. Fields—come Tony time. (Another fun fact: The Wedding Singer has a fake CYNDI LAUPER, but Threepenny Opera has the real one. End of fun fact.)

Unlike A Chorus Line, Threepenny also has an actual man in drag—BRIAN CHARLES ROONEY—as Lucy Brown, and it turns out he's not a condescending **** at all (though he gets to sing the C-word in both English and German). I met Rooney at the SCISSOR SISTERS' after-party at the Cuckoo Club and he was adorable, telling me his stage soprano is real and so are the privates he so wantonly flashes onstage. "If I used prosthetics, they'd be better than that," he said, laughing"

Oh Jeez, here we go again. Corine's "Hall of Who I Interviewed and Now I Want Them To Recognize My Existence" thread.

why post that mean comment?

obviously I am a little biased - but come on - that's just asking for a little bad karma re: Musto praises Felicia P Fields. ;-)

I don't think the c-word ever appears in the German text.

I don't believe most of the words on the subtitle screen appear in the German text.

He only sings it in English - and it is perhaps the only time the word is actually funny.

But, I think we get you like Felicia...and now Rooney.
At least, in some matters, you have good taste.

Now, why the hell is Felicia going back to Chicago! re: Musto praises Felicia P Fields. ;-) (rhetorical question, I know why)

P.S. Corine - thanks for cleaing up that Boogie Nights conundrum that would have haunted this production of Threepenny for years after it closed.

The subtitles say yes, but the German says no...

I guess it depends on interpretation, huh...

And I am saying the only time he sings it is in English.

They use, for the most part, the original German text of Lucy's Aria.

And the word never appears IN German.

What are you talking about?

Now here is a shocker. The "C" word appears in a thread about Corine and I am NOT the one to use it! re: Musto praises Felicia P Fields. ;-)

PEACE.

What do you mean what am I talking about?

In the show, the revival of THE THREEPENNY OPERA, as translated by Wallace Shawn and sung by Brian Charles Rooney, he sings "THE C WORD" in English AND in German. I'm positive.

*********SPOILERS*********

Eifersucht! JEALOUSY
Wut, RAGE
Liebe und Furcht zugleich LOVE AND FEAR TOGETHER
Reissen mich in Stucke. TEAR ME IN PIECES
Vom Sturm hin und her geworfen, TOSSED BACK AND FORTH BY STORMS
Von Kummer zerbrochen! BROKEN BY GRIEF

The rat is poison is ready. Yesterday she was here every couple of hours hoping to speak to me.

Oh, dieses falsche Aas! OH THAT FALSE BEAST
Wahrscheinlich will sie sich an meiner Verzweiflung weiden. SHE PROBABLY WANTS TO GLOAT OVER MY DESPAIR
Oh Welt, OH WORLD
Oh Menschen, OH MANKIND
Wie seid Ihr schlecht! HOW EVIL YOU ARE!

This lady doesn’t know me yet. And it wouldn’t be wise of her to drink my gin. Certainly not to stimulate herself before going to play with her dear Mackie!

Sie stirbt durch meinen Gin! SHE'LL DIE FROM MY GIN
Sie stirbt durch meinen Gin!

Sie stirbt, sie stirbt, sie stirbt! SHE'LL DIE...
Ja, hier, hier YES, HERE, HERE,
Ich sie sich winden sehen! I WANT TO SEE HER WRITHE IN PAIN

I’ll set him free from prison
And this little girl plans to open the bottle and steal all the cream!?
When this CUNT has drunk the poison
The world can sigh with pleasure

The word appears only once! The only other time a negative word appears is "aas" and I suppose Mensch is used negatively...but hardly as CUNT.

IN THE TEXT THE WORD ONLY APPEARS IN ENGLISH.

This is a different translation. JESUS!

Shawn replaced the following German text with the English phrases:

Das Rattengift steht bereit.
Seit gestern kommt sie alle paar Stunden her,
um mich zu sprechen.

AND

Meinen Gin wird sie nicht trinken,
damit sie nachher mit ihrem Mackie lustig sein kann.

AND

Und diese Person soll den Rahm abschöpfen?
Wenn ich dieses Mensch vergifte,
dann kann die Welt aufatmen.

Either we aren't talking about the same thing...or you are just confused.

There is no German word for CUNT ever used in the original German text of Lucy's Aria. This IS the ORIGINAL German text AND the text used in the show.

What does the original German libretto have to do with the current revival? NOTHING.

Are you even talking about Lucy's Aria?

Lucy's Aria in the show is the original version written by BRECHT.
Brecht NEVER wrote the word CUNT in GERMAN in LUCY'S ARIA.

So I have no idea what the hell you are talking about.

BSO. I couldn't make it any clearer.

IN THE REVIVAL, I am almost positive that Lucy sang the word "c*nt" in both English and in German. I distinctly remember hearing it in German, seeing it in English on the screen, and laughing.

I could be wrong, but I really beleive I remember hearing it.

I also saw the first preveiw - we may have seen different things, or it may just be so long ago that I forget.

Oh!

Well, I said already.

The English translation on the screen is not accurate.

They made everything dirtier than it really is.

So, yes. I think they translated "aas" as "CUNT" - but, in truth, that was just to get laughs and has no bearing on the original German.

ETA: The actual German coming out of Brian Charles Rooney's mouth never has anything to do with the word CUNT.

But, yes, in ENGLISH, he does say the word CUNT.

The above lyrics are the actual things he says. Updated On: 5/2/06 at 03:17 PM

I sing "c*nt" in English but not in German... the translation is fired up... it's the same intent, but more gritty, perhaps...

I sing in German: Oh, this deceitful piece of meat

and the translation uses "C*nt" for "meat"

but the German that I sing is all original
