I know it's dumb to start another Rent thread but-
I love you all, and I know Rent is dear to your hearts but-Could it really have lived up to your high expectations? The movie is, okay. I know you are all dissapointed, but really, think about it...could it really have lived up to your vision of what the film should be? No! Be happy that most of the original cast is there, that the Broadway text wasn't cut to shreads, and that it at least is somewhat faithful to Larson's vision.
So please, let's talk about the millions of other Broadway related subjects, and MOVE ON!

Posted: 11/24/05 at 1:59pmI do think there is quite a bit or repetitiveness in some of these threads, but come on, the movie came out yesterday...let us have a little bit of time for over-obsession.

Put it all in one thread! There is a huge Rent review thread.
I'm starting to miss some of the Wicked threads.
Ugh, did I actually type that?

I say just let it be.
It'll die down soon.
People here will obviously post MORE just to spite you.

Posts are fine. But don't you think complaining about something that will never change, and is set in stone, is kind of pointless. Should've could've are all good and well, but it ain't gonna make the movie any better.
I say be thankful that Justin Timberlake didn't play Roger and Britney Spears didn't play Maureen.

Posted: 11/24/05 at 2:14pmRemember all those horrible rumors of people who were going to be cast in the movie when Spike Lee was going to direct it? Although I thought his direction was a bit underwhelming, at least Columbus had the sense to cast legit performers.

I can't help being a little heartbroken and bitter that the director was incompetent.
HOWever, since ti IS Thanksgiving. I'm thankful for that wonderful cast. And the fact that the director made one good choice...that being his casting these people.

There were enough good things about the film for me to be thankful it was made.
Movie musicals are tough to shoot, especially modern rock musicals. Tricky. I doubt anyone could have made it a superb film, but at least, we have that great cast.

Posted: 11/24/05 at 2:17pmI haven't seen the film yet and have only seen the show so I can't weigh in an honest opinion until I've seen it. But then again I may not even post it here on BWW.

Posted: 11/24/05 at 2:18pmI love how a lot of the most scathing reviews of the movie all have some comment about how the talent of all of the leads is tremendous. That says a lot, considering a lot of good movies get bad reviews because of the acting!

*I* could have done better (at directing). And what I mean by that is that it could EASILY have been better if someone with a brain directed it. It's a tough craft, but it could have been a LOT better. A whole lot better. Worlds better.

Umm... lived up to? How about completely blew me away and left me with a feeling of total, complete, elation.
I guess the difference with me was, I never expect perfection when I go to things. Because perfection doesn't exist. And Rent is no exception. I went in, honestly nervous after some of the reviews I had heard, and by the time I left the theater, all I could think was, "Yes. That was what I've been waiting so long for. That was... so worth it."
::shrug:: I'll admit that I'm extremely easy to please. But I had no complaints about the movie.

This movie totally exceeded my expectations. I was really worried about it going in. I just saw the musical for the first time in March in NYC and was absolutely enthralled by it. I felt that there were so many wonderful parts of the film; I'll be seeing it a few more times and even here in Nebraska (I'm home for Thanksgiving) the film got a very complimentary review
Hope you're all having a wonderful Thanksgiving.
Cheers,
C.

Posted: 11/24/05 at 6:48pmLOL - um... you started ANOTHER thread and added comments about the film where people will respond to, hence defeating your initial purpose - now thats absurd

Posted: 11/24/05 at 7:01pmThere are now more threads bitching about the threads than there are threads about Rent. Just wanted to say that.

Very true BOBBY. I was moved when I saw it, maybe on repeat viewing I may not like things about it. I cried in the theatre three times, (never usually cry at the nederlander). Maybe it was jsut cause it was made, it was there, they were there, and (pardon me) but it felt like Jonathan was there.
Ok producers anyone?
