Last Saturday, during intermission at Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, I struck up a coversation with the woman sitting beside me and her 9- or 10-year old granddaughter. Discovering I was on vacation, they asked what other shows I had seen. When I mentioned Sweeney Todd, the grandmother asked, "Oh, what's that about?" I kind of fumbled for words, not quite knowing how to explain the plot to persons who, I assumed, weren't familiar with it. I finally got out, "It's about this barber who kills his..." but before I could continue, the little girl blurts out, "Oh, I know, he slits their throats! And then this weird lady chops up the bodies and makes them into PIES!!" Seeing the look of shock my face, the girl added, "I read ALL about Broadway!!" I chuckled to myself the rest of the night. A little, budding Sondheim fan. It was the cutest thing.

Wow! The Sondheim fans are getting younger and younger.
Who wants to place bets that this girl is a member of BWW?

five years ago i picked up Sweeney and Hair at the library and i told my parents in detail about the nude scene in Hair (my friend gave me a script from her production) and i acted out the Johnanna slit-the-throat scene.

twas fun

I started listening to Sweeney when I was ten, mainly because my dad listened to it.

Well, I got my other ten year old friend addicted to it as well and the first time I went over to her house for a sleep-over we decided to play Sweeney Todd, I was Sweeney, she was Mrs. Lovett, and her little sister was a barber shop customer. Needless to say I wasnt invited back for awhile..
