The David Edelstein piece in NY Magazine this week purports to be an essay on "stars on B'way," Roberts in particular, but is clearly at thinly veiled review. Or should I say reviews. He paid to go to the first preview, and one two weeks later, and comments on every aspect of her performance, how it evolved, and ultimately, on the 2nd visit, on how it (mis)serves the balance in Greenberg play.

All of this is supposedly allowable because he paid for the seats? I think it's a new low practice -- TIME did the same thing, basically -- to scoop a theatrical event pre-reviews. And I even agred with every word of his appraisal.

It's still lousy and unehtical. No actor, of stage or screen -- should have his first performance analyzed in print.

When I think about how much handwringing goes on here, at this board, about such posts! And we aren't members of the 4th estate. Shameful.
