NY Times Tony Predictions Are Up

I agree with most of these, though both are predicting way more love for Death of a Salesman than I am. I don't think it's winning either of the featured categories or direction.

Why should Sons of the Prophet be nominated for a Best Play Tony? It's Off-Broadway.

It says at the top:

For the “Should have been nominated” category, the critics were allowed to expand the potential nominees to Off Broadway productions that were ineligible for the Broadway-only Tonys.

I'd be thrilled if Norm Lewis were to win. I'd also be thrilled if Steve Kazee won.

I'm just surprised at all the Michael Cerveris love there.

Me too Robbie! I thought Norm was wonderful. I'd like a tie between him and Burstein.

I'm so perplexed over both "should"s for Houdyshell. Kaye definitely deserves it, imo.

I loved Jayne in FOLLIES, but can't for the life of me understand why both think she should win over Judy Kaye (while they both predict Kaye will win). I also believe they are both wrong and that ONCE will win. And I don't think their predictions mean that Danny won't win.

I find it interesting that Isherwood says Kazee should win (which I agree with) but in the other article posted today, he singles out Raines and Burstein as two of the only shining performances this season. And I think they are both crazy wrong about Cerveris. I really think Boykin has that one sewn up.

I had no idea there was that much love for Cerveris.

I will be shocked if anyone other than Christian Borle wins Featured Actor in a Play. I don't think Garfield will beat him.

I have a problem with the NY Times and Tony (or Oscar or any award) predictions.

It is the paper's policy that their critics do not vote either for the Tonys or in the NY Drama Critics Circle voting.

If you don't vote, don't kibitz the races. C'mon.

And for the last time (in theory at least), NY Times Drama Dept., the Tonys, whether you like it or or not, are for Broadway shows only and your annual little jab is hot air especially when you do not participate.

They need to get in the game or just keep still.

I really hope Garfield does win over Borle.

I found Garfield's performance extremely honest, smart, and layered. A true victory of the role, especially given the non-traditional casting.

While I was amused during moments of Borle's performance, I found it one-dimensional and predictable. The character choices were broad and audience-pleasing, rather than unique & honest.

Oh...I actually four of the five men in the Leading Actor in a Musical category could conceivably win (Ron Raines' honor was the nomination). I would not be surprised in the least if any of them one.

I, too, am pulling for light, though I've adored Emond since I saw her in 1776.

I also think David Alan Grier might end up walking away with the Tony for Porgy and Bess.

I think Danny will win. I also think Once will surprise everyone and win. I also hold to my belief that Judith Light will take home the Tony.

I love how Brantley gave Elaine Paige, Berndaette Peters, and Eric Schaeffer shout outs. I agree with him.

The featured actor buzz could certainly skew towards Cerveris now. That is what happened in 2009 when Brantley and Isherwood both said Karen Olivo should and will win the Tony.

My Favourite New Year Times article of the year, is it possible to get other years predictions?

Who would of thought of Ben would of said that Patrick Page or Elaine Paige should of been nominated. However it came across as arrogant that Ben's intern (Charles Isherwood) should of elected in so many categories to say "None" should of been nominated.

I have a strong sense that Once is going to win. There's just too many people out there gunning for anything Disney (like you, Brantley). I'm firmly convinced that Brantley's turnaround re: Once stemmed from his animosity to Disney and Spiderman. IMO (only), Once is a dreary little nothing of a musical that should have stayed off-Broadway. I feel sorry for the out-of-towners who will be suckered into seeing this piece of junk because it won the Tony. Too bad Lysistratra didn't wait until later in the season to open -- wasn't any great show, but entertaining for what it set out to do.

I too am surprised at the Cerveris predictions.

But overall, I agree with their "will win"s.
