I know we've all been talking about movies that should be turned into musicals. Does anyone know of any musicals that should be turned into movies. Musicals that are recent I mean. I think Thoroughly Modern Millie would make a great musical movie remake using all the new songs from the show. Similar to the Producers (which is also a remake). I think it might make a better ABC made for TV movie though (TMM that is). Do you have any ideas?
Maybe The Full Monty in a few years? Hairspray?

Posted: 8/23/04 at 10:43amI think wicked is being made into a tv movie, based off the book. I think hairspray would make a wonderful remake, being as how the musical is so similar to the movie. with songs of course! and millie would be good. i'm excited about phantom. little shop would be a good remake with the songs. EVERY MUSICAL WOULD BE GREAT!

I think musicals are essentially a theatrical form. The old classics were essentially recorded stage performances done in "natural" or soundstage environments (ie. West Side Story). I know these days filmmakers are trying an MTV-editing approach, thanks to Moulin Rouge; but it still requires a lot of adaptation of the original material, and even then it's a stretch (the Chicago movie still seems more stage than film), because musicals are intrinsically theatrical.
Having said that, though, I would love to see Les Miz, Hairspray and Miss Saigon as movies.

Posted: 8/23/04 at 12:40pmI love Millie, but it's better for TV. I can't see it in theaters. And Hairspray would also be great. I can't imagine Wicked as a TV movie. I think seeing it live would be better.

Posted: 8/23/04 at 12:51pmif you read the book, you'll understand it's SO MUCH DIFFERENT than the musical, and would translate well into a movie. i read an interview with gregory maguire that said it will be a tv movie sometime in 2006 or something like that.

Posted: 8/23/04 at 1:39pmIt's not going to be the musical version right? if that ever becomes a movie it should just be like a recorded version like Smokey Joes Cafe and Cats

Posted: 8/23/04 at 3:17pmIm actually watching Swing Time right now (and I think Never Gonna Dance needs a 2nd chance with a new cast-that can both sing and dance) and it just reminded me of the old 42nd street movie. Id love to see it made into a new movie with all the musical numbers from the stage.

Posted: 8/23/04 at 3:26pmI think every musical deserves to be made into a movie. Even though some movie musicals are horrible(ie Chorus Line) they are the closest thing we will get to having a show that we can watch it whenever we want.

Posted: 8/23/04 at 3:37pmI read the book 3 times. If the book were the movie that would be great. But if it were the musical...no.

Posted: 8/23/04 at 3:54pmThe Wicked book would make a much better movie. As much as I liked the show, it lacked the depth and meaning of the book. The book had so much more symbolism and real issues in it.

Posted: 8/23/04 at 4:03pmYeah and so did Hairspray, Im talking about remaking movies that were made into musicals back into movies lol, only this time with all the Broadway material. Like all the numbers from the show now in the movie. And the same plot and book too.

You know you're on a Broadway board when....
I think the general populace doesn't even know that Oscar-nominated The Full Monty was turned into a musical.

YAY....I knew! Of course, I have friends who are movie nuts, so I get to hear all their incessant film rambling. (Do you know how much it sucks to be the only one in your circle of friends to enjoy Broadway? ARGH!!!)
