Most folk enjoy looking at these old programs so I thought I'd periodically post some scans from my collection here.
It’s September 16, 1901 and the Garrick Theatre (at 67 W. 35th Street) is presenting “Captain Jinks of the Horse Marines” starring America’s favorite leading lady, Ethel Barrymore!
This is one of my favorite old programs and it’s in very bad condition. I thought I’d just take some scans and let you enjoy those ads. Some things (like charity baseball games) haven't changed at all. Others (like the rent on a midtown apartment or the price of a CASE of champagne) have changed GREATLY!
These are really cool. Thanks for sharing.
I can tell I am going to love this thread. I was a history major in college and seeing original source material like that 1901 program always gives me a tingle. I think advertisements say a lot about attitudes and what's important in a particular time period. Ads in a theater program for cruise lines and apartment buildings and cases of champagne give a feeling for a moment in time very different than today's. Wonder who won the Actors vs. Artists baseball game. Seeing that they were playing to raise money for a hospital bed, on other hand, just reminded me of the issues that continue today and why the Actors Fund and BCEFA and so many other charities are still so needed.
