Patti Lupone will be back on Broadway in Sweeney Todd. I love this gal and cannot wait to see her in it!!!!!!!

Posted: 7/29/05 at 9:15amI think she is terribly miscast. I hope she is taking diction and accent lessons. Loved her in Evita and Anything Goes, but the live Sweeney recording is a travesty.

weren't we hearing for weeks that she was out of it? hmmm...where do these nasty little rumours start? i think her voice has the most wonderful dramatic tone -- but i can't imagine her doing lovett's opening number -- spitting out all those words so quickly. honestly, i never know what she's saying. she's very casual with her consonant sounds. wish i'd seen baranski. saw a production at the hanger theater in ithaca years ago w/ an actress named caren browning who is recurring on L&O SVU and she was right good. i would have gone for debra monk. such a wonderful actress. well, the deed is done. let the games begin...

Posted: 7/29/05 at 9:34amI'm in the minority of people who liked LuPone's Mrs. Lovett. The only gripe I have is that she's going to look so old next to Cerveris.

Posted: 7/29/05 at 9:43ami think mrs. lovett can be older..having the hots for a younger man.

Posted: 7/29/05 at 10:02amI plan to be in New York when previews start. I however do not plan to see this show. It is my favorite and I don't care for Ms. Lupone's take on the character vocally. I was so looking forward to this production after hearing about it in London. Sorry, but outside of Evita, she just doesn't do it for me at all. I think she was awful in Candide.

Posted: 7/29/05 at 10:26amI think her Lovett is okay, I hope it improves to Broadway, but I have no complaints. Michael is a great actor and singer, though this isn't his role IMO.

I doubt that she'd take the role, or it would be given to her, if she wasnt ready for it....
That said, I was at the Lincoln Center concert, and her accent was all over the place. I would've rather her simply have the accent, because she sang it beautifully...and didnt try to copy others. She wont be Angie and shouldnt try to be...
she can do it.

oh, I'm soo excited! I really want to see her in this!
I dont know if my parents would let me see it, is it okay for young people (well, not young, but a young teen)? is there like a lot of cursing, and stuff like that?

Posted: 7/29/05 at 10:40amI for one am looking forward to her playing the part. I think she is a brilliant actress and a phenomenal vocalist (ya either love it or hate it). I think she will do wonders with the role and bring a new life to it all together.

Posted: 7/29/05 at 11:05amI love Patti, but not as Mrs. Lovett. I'm not sure about Cerveris either.

Soooooo excited! I saw Michael Cerveris in ASSASSINS and he was very good, so it should be interesting to see how he portrays Sweeney. As for Patti, I think she can pull it off. :) Can't wait...
bwayondabrain: There is not so much cursing and that type of "adult material" as the subject is just a little gruesome. It's a very intense story... I'd say do a little bit of research if you haven't been exposed to Sweeney Todd before this production arrives. Don't spoil it for yourself though!
Hmm... maybe someone else can explain it (^^) better! :)

Posted: 7/30/05 at 10:28pmI don't think Ms. Lupone would take the role if she did not feel she could do the part. She is very talented. I, for one, will go to see the show.

Posted: 7/30/05 at 10:32pmHmm..... this could be interesting. I didn't care for her Lovett, but maybe it will be better this fall.

Posted: 7/30/05 at 10:56pmI'd love to see her in this. I got to see her do Matters of the heart. And she has an amazing voice and I thought she was a great performer. Of course I knew her from the Evita recording but it was great to see her live.
