Why does Wendy even need Peter Pan? She already can fly!

Posted: 11/16/09 at 8:34pmGiven how relatively unsurprised flying Wendy was, I have a feeling that was not the first time that happened.

Yeah it definitely looks like something out of a horror movie! Although big props to the actress who played Wendy. She didn't miss a beat when the whole window unit came crashing down.

Good god. How hard is it to label the flying riggs?

For liability purposes, schools often have the children's parents/relatives/guardians fly them backstage (at least this was common practice ten years ago). Or even get volunteer teachers who haven't done theatre in AGES. Things happen, but if you're going to do PETER PAN and you're going to get ZFX or Foy out there to rig you up, you may as well spend the extra money and have them there to fly you.
It's a dilemma for several theatre spaces. They don't really have the fly space to make it look good...but when an audience goes to see PETER PAN, they expect flying.

I couldn't agree more. I saw a community theater production of Peter Pan a few years ago, and I guess they didn't have the fly space to fly the actors so instead the director used strobe lights and had them all wave their arms like they were flying. As you can imagine, it didn't look too good...

Posted: 11/16/09 at 9:47pmI don't quite understand that dilemma. It seems like the more obvious solution would be to pick a show that doesn't feature flying effects or find a different adaptation of the story that doesn't require the actors to fly. Or in this case, the wrong actors.

Posted: 11/16/09 at 10:01pmExactly. But English-teachers-who-also-put-on-school-plays don't exactly have the theatre experience/knowledge to just choose another show. When my English teacher in the 7th grade wanted to do the show, she had only directed the school musical three times previously. She had no other theatre experience except for when she did school plays as a kid. She loves musicals so she did what she knew + what would be appropriate for school + what parents would enjoy. They did shows like BYE BYE BIRDIE, PETER PAN, ANNIE, CINDERELLA, GUYS & DOLLS, etc. The auditorium stage had some fly space but not enough to make the flying worth it. But the students in the show, the audience, and especially the parents ate it up. "OMG I can't believe they're really flying!" "Look at my little Jennifer!" "This production is high-tech!"
