Posted: 5/15/09 at 2:27pmMy very good guy friend wants to propose to his girlfriend of 3 years on stage after they see 9 to 5 this Sunday. He asked me if I could find out how he could make that possible. Any ideas, folks?

That's a strange man hating kind of show to do that at, but if you are in New York you could drop off a note at the stage door for a Stage Manager or Company Manager and seewhat happens.

I know it's a terrible show to propose to but, it's her favorite musical and her favorite actress, Stepahine J Block. He doesn't know anything about the show and has never seen the movie. I tried to tell him but this is the show his gf wanted to see and he doesn't wanna wait any longer to propose to her.....
....on another note....I think it's kinda silly

Posted: 5/15/09 at 3:36pmIf he's a good friend, you might want to tell him how awkward it will be to propose after a man-bashing show. Can't he have a romantic dinner after and do it there?

Posted: 5/15/09 at 3:39pmTrust me I told him that. His gf wants to be a Broadway actor so of course he wants to propose onstage. I said "If you wanna do it onstage, why not pick a more romantic show, like Phantom or even Mamma Mia?" and he's like "No, she wants to see THIS show"!! So....can't say that I didn't try...

If she's a Stephanie fan, I would e-mail Stephanie, she's a very nice woman... you never know.

They might not let anyone who's not Equity on stage because of all the technical things going on up there. There was someone who wanted to propose to his gf onstage at Grease and they wouldn't allow it because they weren't Equity and weren't covered if something happened. But, then again, Spring Awakening allowed it.
Personally, I'd recommend an Off-Broadway show like Altar Boyz. Marvelous Wonderettes, or even Tony 'n' Tina's Wedding. They're smaller and less technical. That might be an easier place to be allowed onstage. Heck, at Wonderettes audience members get pulled onstage during the show. Why wouldn't they allow a proposal onstage?

But, then again, Spring Awakening allowed it.
Spring Awakening was covered, they had audience members on stage.

Oh, yes...I forgot about that.
Then, if he really wants to do it onstage, it'll have to be at a show that allowed people on stage during the actual show. Wonderettes and Altar Boyz both have people pulled onstage during the show.

Posted: 5/15/09 at 4:05pmThey had at least a couple of on stage proposals during The Wedding Singer, so I wasn't aware of any Equity coverage rule about not letting audience members on stage.

I'd have to imagine that the Wedding Singer encouraged such things and may have had coverage for it.
It makes perfect sense though. If this couple went up on stage and stepped on a trap door that opened or something there could be serious trouble.

Take her on a quiet walk after a fancy dinner and do it in the park or at Top of the Rock.
Then rent a fancy hotel room for the after-engagement "bliss".

I read about a woman who was proposed to during SPELLING BEE when she was one of the audience spellers.
That is my dream proposal right there. Onstage, at a Broadway musical, while spelling.

Posted: 5/18/09 at 12:33amWicked has had at least one proposal onstage after the show. There was a photo-op of it either here or on broadway.com.

Posted: 5/18/09 at 12:34amI don't know if it's an equity rule or a rule of the particular insurance company. But, someone was told they could not propose on stage at the Brooks Atkinson because they were not Equity.

I was at a performance of The Wedding Singer, and someone proposed (she said yes). I asked afterwards, and someone told me that something like 8 people had proposed after the show. If I remember correctly, I think that the show website marketed the possibility.
I think the only current Broadway show that has audience members on stage is Hair, but it would seem weird to propose after that show IMO!
