Rent
RELEASE DATE Nov. 23
WHY WE CAN'T WAIT How about — lo-o-o-ve? Er, sorry, it's hard to resist singing the score to the long-awaited adaptation of the Broadway musical, which manages to reunite almost all of the original cast.
THE PREMISE In the 1980s, New York City's then-gritty East Village brings together cutting-edge young artists, sexual free-spirits, and tragically, the AIDS virus.
SOURCE Jonathan Larson's Tony-winning 1996 musical, which in turn is an update of Puccini's opera La Boheme
THE BACK STORY Rosario Dawson is one of the cast's few newbies, but she was raised in the neighborhood. 'Having grown up in a squat, I knew what it was like. And playing someone like [Mimi] just made me want to nurture that girl I grew up around.'
BURNING QUESTION Is anodyne kiddie-film director Chris Columbus (Home Alone, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone) the right director for this material?
COME FOR The names you know — Dawson, Taye Diggs, Law & Order's Jesse L. Martin
STAY FOR The names you may not know, including Idina Menzel, Adam Pascal, Anthony Rapp, and the amazing Wilson Jermaine Heredia as the drag queen Angel

Isn't it kind of wierd to think there are so many people who really don't know Idina Menzel and Adam Pascal? Not to mention Anthony and Wilson. We hear about them so often I can't imagine not knowing about them.
I know. I sometimes wonder if I wasn't so obsessed with Bway (Wicked in particular), would it be a topic that I would hear about a lot?

Thank god RENT is above Get Rich or Die Tryin'.
The critics are digging it...
Let's see...aside from people who have seen Wicked, and are in love with Broadway, I can't think of anyone who would know who Idina Menzel is. I remember one of my friends knowing about her due to some article she read about interacial marriage that featured Tidina. With that aside, and a few people who had a clue who she was after I mentioned her once was due to her unfortunate accident at the end of her run during Wicked, and the death threats?
I can see Adam Pascal becoming the next sex god that people will have plastered on their lockers, binders, etc. And well you get the pleasure of saying you fancied him first.
I even imagine that people I know unfortunately will not be moved by the story.

Why not also stay for the great Tracie Thoms? I don't see any mention of her.
FYI, MSNBC now has Rent listed as one of ten films most likely to receive Oscar nominations (Best Picture). The others are Munich, The Producers, Brokeback Mountain, Memoirs of a Geisha, Oliver Twist, Pride and Prejudice, Elizabethtown, The New World and Jarhead.

It's nice to see EW giving this movie so much publicity. It can only help the movie, plus, we get more pretty pictures!
"I remember one of my friends knowing about her due to some article she read about interacial marriage that featured Tidina."
When I went with my younger sister to see Wicked, I told her that the leading actress was married to Taye Diggs, and she was more excited about that than me telling her Idina was had won the Tony and was in the Rent OBC. Of course, now my sister loves her, but it was definitely an eye-opener on the non-theater fan perspective.
I just love that the article gave props to all the actors, because Adam, Anthony, Idina and Wilson are definitely just as talented as their castmates, Most people seem to think that being a Hollywood star is the only measure of talent, and I'm glad EW acknowledged that.
Yea... I was so glad to read a mention for Anthony, Adam, Idina, and Wilson! I'm glad they finally got a mention somewhere! ... but yea, poor Tracie! Oh well.
And the fact that a viable source has predicted Rent making a run at Best Picture makes me oh so happy!

THEY'RE MAKING A WALLACE & GROMIT MOVIE?!?!
Eh, hem...
Yeah, great publicity. Can't wait, myself.

Dreading that.

I feel like people at least know Idina's name, by virtue of the fact that she's married to Taye Diggs, maybe?
Got my "I loved Adam before RENT was a movie" avatar all ready and rarin' to go. Slightly in jest, so I hope it doesn't come off as being *truly* snobbish. *shrug* I think it's funny. And who knows? Maybe with the not-so-conventionally-attractive jungle boy hair, he won't hit such crazy sex-god status?
(By the way, I LOVE LOVE LOVE Wallace and Grommit.)
"Maybe with the not-so-conventionally-attractive jungle boy hair, he won't hit such crazy sex-god status?"
Silly, Em.
One can hope, though.

Is that the picture they are using in the magazine? They are killing me with all of these different RENT magazines... it sounds kind of stupid, but I work at minimum wage! I really think that I need to find another job, considering that when the RENT movie hits... money will be lost!
Anyway, thanks for the information... I might as well just start subscribing to EW. I had planned on it and I had never gotten the chance yet, but I might as well now...

Well, honestly - I mean, most people don't seem too keen on jungle boy Pascal's hair.
(Or... 'Madam Adam' as I suppose it were...)
If the hair turns them off in the beginning, once they hear that voice, they'll either forget about the hair or it'll grow on 'em. Then forget it when they all start doing their google searches on him and start seeing all his different looks through the years.

Obviously, The Fountain's low-publicity, stay-mysterious plan is working like a charm.
Dammit.
