you know i love the show. and i want to see this version (the london staging) so bad, and now that it has rachel in it!
Question: She hasn't completed her run in Dessa Rose yet right? Doesn't it close next Sunday?
Dessa Rose ends on May 29th and previews for Ragtime starts June 8th.
wow...she doesn't have much time to learn the part. i'm sure she'll be fantsatic in it anyway.
seeing Dessa Rose for the second and final time tonight. very excited.

she's played mother before, i'm sure it won't be difficult for her to re-learn it, since most of the role is through music.
That's too bad for Jayne, who I'm sure would have been wonderful as Mother. But, Rachel York is a more than worthy replacement!
Where has Rachel performed as Mother before?
I was not aware that Rachel had played Mother before. I was originally not planning to see this production, but now, I think that I must go.
think she was mother in london, yes? in any event, it's going to be quite a show. i love ms. york and her solo CD is one i play quite often. you can always count on the papermill for the most top-notch shows west of manhattan.
Maria Friedman was Mother in London.
Very exciting! I'm glad I got tickets awhile back.
She was good in Kiss Me Kate - not as good as Carolee - but good, none-the-less. I think she should be pretty good as Mother.

I'm so there! And Rachel has not played Mother before. In London she played Lilli Vanessi/Katharine in KISS ME, KATE.
Rachel York has got to be the busiest person on stage these days. First DESSA ROSE, now RAGTIME, plus SUMMER OF '42 on May 23, BROADWAY BY THE YEAR on June 13, and the Julie Andrews tribute at the Goodspeed on June 11. How does she do it?! I'm tired just thinking about it.

apd,
Nope. Wasn't her. Good thing she's a quick study. :)

This isn't a Rachel question but more of a Ragtime one. Does anyone know specific staging of the London version and how it differs from the US version? The Papermill keeps promoting it as the AWARD WINNING LONDON VERSION and here I am thinking "how different can it be?"

it's wicked stripped down.
it's a minimalist production..
lc, who was it then?
It was Julia Murney.

Stripped down/minimalist=almost NO "scenery". A unit set with some glass window panels and one catwalk/bridge. NO Model T Ford. A bunch of chairs.
Also the cast is half the size of Broadway - 28 people.

ah yes, now i remember. damn, i thought i read that rachel had done mother before... but i'm sure she'll still be great. it's a wonderful role and she's a wonderful actress.
I would have loved to Julia as Mother. I'm sure she was fabulous; the role is perfect for her. That whole production sounds terrific. The always wonderful Michael Rupert played Tateh. And Norm as Coalhouse...No words.

when michael was on tour as tateh in boston he came and saw the show i was in and talked to me and everything... then when i went to see it on broadway he had moved up to the broadway cast so i got to see him play tateh there. and you know who was his sarah (not that tateh and sarah interact!)... lachanze. how i love them both! marvin and ti moune in one show together!
