Noted in the same column...
>> Acorn Media has made their theatrical DVD release a double billing, as they have also made available "The Best of the Tony Awards – The Plays," individually for the first time.
Is this going to engender the same firestorm of lawsuits as the musical releases?
I remember seeing this revival onstage in Boston, and then again when they showed it on television.
I loved it back then, and I'm glad they're re-releasing it.
I wonder if it will hold up after all these years. The specific things I remember are:
Meg Bussert is a terrific Guenevere.
Richard Harris was too old, but he's such a good actor, it works just fine. (His bright blue eyes could be seen from the balcony of the Wang Center in Boston -- which was then The Met.)
Richard Muenz was a hot Lancelot. I remember him stirring something in my young, impressionable libido way back then. He sings beautifully.
Also, William Parry, who would later be the original Boatman in SITPWG, plays one of the supporting knights.
Looking forward to seeing it again...

"His bright blue eyes could be seen from the balcony of the Wang Center in Boston"
That was his eye SHADOW. And it's not toned down for the video.
I said this in another thread back awhile, but I think there's a bit of "Emperor's New Clothes" going on here, so I'll come right out with it: Richard Harris is spectacularly awful in this video. Only a great actor could give a performance that extravagantly bad. He's jaw-droppingly, unintentionally hilarious.
But really, for this reason, it must be seen, and I'm glad it's being released!
I just got my copy today. Wow!!! It captures the feeling of being a stage production, because it IS a stage production and not a "hollywoodized" performance. I remember seeing this back in the 80's on HBO and I am so glad that it is now available to us again. I truly recommend this DVD to anyone who likes Camelot or a good old fashioned musical. The DVD extras even include a pdf file of the Playbill on the DVD Rom. I have to admit however that the opening credits reminded me a little too much of "Superman-the movie." Don't let the "hollywood" opening credits fool you, this DVD presents as true a theatre experience as you can get on video.
Of course I realize that it was his eye shadow NOW. I was giving my impressions of a kid being in the balcony of a live performance.
And Richard Harris is not jaw-droppingly bad. He's fine.
I'll, personally, take what I can get. The more theatrical performances released, the better. I'm willing to put up with what could be perceived as 'performance deficiencies' if it means that I get to see the theatricality of a production at home, although I still think Richard Harris is fine. (At least he's not David-Hasselhoff-terrible, who is indeed jaw-droppingly bad on the atrocious J&H DVD.)

Well, I must grant you, he's not Hasselhoffian!
Total agreement about releasing theatrical performances, too. I'm very happy this is available, for both its negative and positive kicks.
