Just one more thing to add to the recent Wicked discussion I guess but what did they change between the 2 cities?
Thanks
Good question though, is this running now, is it cast?
It had the same cast in California I think. I don't think it could've gotten nominated for Tonys if it was on the West Coast. You gotta start somewhere.
SF was it's out of town tryout. Did they change song placement? Lyrics? Delete scenes.. etc?
BTW I did a search before and didn't find anything
Don't think so, I think it stayed pretty intact. Im not sure though.
I heard a verson of Defying Gravity from SF, and some of the words were different. This is some of the cast are all I know of that were different.
I think that the biggest difference was that one was in SF and the other is in NYC.

In saw it last week on Broadway for the first time since SF previews (so basically a year apart, my memory was a bit rusty regarding the show in SF). The main changes that I noticed were Dancing Through Life (obviously), and the fact that they got rid of most of the dialogue that occured prior to that scene (what was originally Which Way Is The Party). Defying Gravity was a bit different, less talking between Glinda and Elphaba. The only other big change I noticed might spoil it for those who haven't seen...but basically they do a much better job of explaining why Glinda was born green (who her father was)...I remember the dialogue in that particular scene needing a lot of work in the SF run. Other than that the show's pretty similar. And Joel Grey and Christopher Fitzgerald are fitting re-casts.

Now, this is an Wicked post that doesn't bother me. It has some relevance (sp?) to others.
Yes, obviously the cast has changed slightly. I believe it contains a lot of the same ensemble. WickedonBroadway.net contains some great info on the SF cast, songlist, etc.

The SF cast had a different Dillamond, Wizard, and Elphaba standby.

At the beginning of SF Wicked, I think Stephanie J. Block was playing Elphaba (Liza with a Z in Boy from Oz). I heard she was very sad when she wasn't able to go with the show to NY.
"Which Way to the Party" was in place of "Dancing Through Life"

It is soooooo different. Insanely different. *SPOILERS*
First off the cast had three changes:
San Fran Cast:
Boq: Kirk McDonald
Wizard: Robert Morse
Dr. Dillamond: John Horton
Boq was played as a geek which was an interesting twist for the character, but I hated his rendition. Chris Fitzgerald is a bazillion times better. And rather than Boq being annoying Fizgerald gains sympahy for Boq rather than wanting to kill him.
I prefered Robert Morse to Joel Gray, he was more of a worn man rather than a bouncy old man. His rendition was "Wonderful" was so powerful, especially at the beginning. He gives a sense of sympathy for the Wizard which Joel Grey doesn't give.
I loved John Horton as well, neither one is better than the other.
Song wise there were some major song changes. "The Wicked Witch of the East" was not in San Fran at all. Although there was a scene that had bits that were similar to WWoTE.
"Dancing Through Life" was "Which Way is the Party" and was much more humorous than DTL. It also had some really awsome chrous bits in the middle of the song which were awsome and I'm sad they took them out.
Defying Gravity is just a tad different in that Elphaba flys up much earlier and she also had her voice on a booming echo mic thingy starting at "It's not her, she has nothing to do with it!"
At the end of "No One Mourns the Wicked" there was a line about the Wicked having thorns on their heads (I kid you not) which I'm not surprised was taken out, it certainly must have offended some people.
Elphaba's first lines in the musical about her being green were completely different as well, as was when Fieyro and Elphaba steal the lion cub.
One of the most dramatic plot changes involved Dr. D. After "I'm not that Girl" Madame M. came running to tell Elphaba that he had killed himself. The next scene is his funeral and thats where Galinda changes her name (becasue Dr. D kept pronouncing it wrong, in honor of him) also Fieyro and Elphaba talk seriously about love, where Fiyero admits that he doesn't believe in love. As it turns out Dr. D is not dead, he was put in a cage by the wizard and hidden in the Oz palace.
Elphaba also gets her Witch's hat in a different part of the story.
Fieyro's enterance is very differnet, he bumps into Elphaba and asks her where history class is rather than him being dropped off by his driver and Glinda and Boq watching on. Although Glinda and Boq are in that scene when he arrives, the "It's Boq, you're touching me" stuff was not in San Fran at all.
Overall I felt that the dialoge in San Fran was much better, than Broadway. I liked Which way is the Party but DTL maes much more sense. Also Wicked Witch of the East is so awsome and it definately glad that its in the Broadway version. Cast wise, I prefer Boq to the Wizard (Boq being my favortite character in the book) on Broadway he is sooo much better (kudos to ChrisFitz) but I totally perfer Robert Morse as the Wizard. So you win some, you lose some.
Whew. I hope thats of some help. Its reaaaalllly different.

This is all very interesting. Is there any way I can find out info about the SF production? Are there photos or anything? I didn't realize they had changed so much.

Robert Morse creeped me out. I haven't seen Joel Gray, but just from listening to him I like him a whole lot better.
According to MusicalSchwartz.com many changes were made to "Wizard and I" as well...mostly lyrically. I know there is a website that has the old lyrics.
Ok, I found TONS of different lyrics on Stacy's Musical Village web site.
Making Good (eventually replaced by Wizard and I)
Unlimited, think of it Nessa
The future is Unlimited
And, don't laugh
I have a vision almost like a prophecy, Nessa
You can call me crazy
True, the vision's hazy
But I swear someday there'll be
A celebration throughout Oz, that's all to do with me
You'll see
At long long last, I'm making my way
Out of here
Erase the past
And as of today, clean and clear
Today I start my quest
To find my special destiny
Be more than just the best I could
I'll be making good
Cause in my gut, I know I can do, something great
I don't know what yet, but when I'm through, just you wait
One day see all I've done, they'll tell me you're so wonderful
We wish back then we'd understood, you'd be making good
Good, I'll be making good
Undertaking new inventions or discoveries
Maybe find a cure for some disease
Maybe make some great injustice cease
Or perhaps create a masterpiece
Something that astounds
Something that amazes
Something that has everybody singing my praises
The shouts of love will burn through the air
And what's more
A certain governor will be there
Claiming credit for
This magic child of his, boasting how proud he is of me
For doing things the wizard would not even contemplate
So they can, go ahead and laugh
'Til their sides are aching
But if I do half
what I feel inside me waking
They'll be cheering after
I have finished making good
No, not making good
Making Great
Here's a verse for Fiyero in "As Long As You're Mine" that was replaced:
What am I doing?
What's this I feel?
The boy who was certain
Love isn't real
And, some lyrics in "No Good Deed" that were eliminated:
Unlimited
The damage is unlimited
To everyone I've tried to help
Or tried to love
And, oh, Fiyero, you're the latest
Victim of my greatest achievement
In a long career of distress
Every time I could, I tried making good
And what I made was a mess!
