STAGE DOOR as a musical?

I was talking to a friend yesterday and said I thought STAGE DOOR would make a great musical and he said it had already been attempted. Does anyone know anything about this?? I'd love to see a production of it someday if it's true.

The main problem I see with turning Stage Door into a musical is that, like many old comedies from the 1930s, it has so many characters. Would you just cut some of them out? It's a high personality show, and they can't all have their own songs.

I have always thought that that movie lends itself to musicalization. I would love to see it attempted again.
I'm not familiar with any previous incarnations though.
