Say it Somehow

Posted: 6/25/06 at 9:59pmI think this song from Piazza would make a wonderful pop/R&B hit. Every time I hear it now, I envision it being sung by Anita Baker and Peabo Bryson or some similar couple - it really lends itself to being adapted to a pop sound.

The choice may have been mistaken, The choosing was not... "Every day has the potential to be the greatest day of your life." - Lin-Manuel Miranda

Posted: 6/25/06 at 10:05pmNo, I'm not joking at all. Every time I hear the chord structure, it reminds me of some older R&B recordings, and I think it would sound great sung that way.

Posted: 6/25/06 at 10:12pmI will bet any amount of money that before long (if it hasn't been already) people will be doing the song in their cabaret acts and recording it on their solo CDs. And in Cabaret (at least in NYC) people really change it up. Some of the best cabaret acts aren't even about the singers, they are about the wonderful new and different arrangements that their musical directors come up with.

Posted: 6/25/06 at 10:16pmI'll side with redhot here because I can hear this being a radio hit. With a change in some of the instrumentation, and after dropping the accents, it could work.

It's a GORGEOUS song and lends itself to the pop sound. The lyrics, the feeling...
I'd LOVE to hear Kelly Clarkson and/or Josh Groban sing it in that style.
Look at the title song of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST
It was well received on radio.

Posted: 6/25/06 at 10:30pmIt's not that I can't see it being made into a popular version (it definitely has the potential), but the whole part without lyrics that is just "Ahhh"s...I don't know how that part would go over.

Wow, I never thought about that, but I definitely agree!
And I'm loving the Anita Baker/Peabo Bryson idea.

Posted: 6/25/06 at 10:34pmbjh, I was thinking that part could be either dropped or shortened, because if I remember correctly, there are no more lyrics after it.

Posted: 6/25/06 at 10:38pmWell there are several sections like that, but only the one long one at the end, yes. But I don't feel like you can just cut that end part. They would have to rewrite it.

I just relistened to the recording, and I can envision this idea even more now! I agree with Joshua, they could repeat the lyrics in some of the "ah ah ah" sections. And of course, they'd have to drop the proposal business.

I don't care how it's sung, as long as it's sung well.
i LOVE this song.

Posted: 6/25/06 at 11:39pmor they could do Beyonce riffs all over it. Honestly they could do the ah's as is and simply change the vowel or something. It'd be fine. Of course there are some crafty arrangers out there so they could do anything with it. Although it'd be a pop hit for about 10 years ago. They're not really making pop music like this anymore.

Posted: 6/26/06 at 12:58amI could definitely see this. I would never have thought of it, but now that it's mentioned, I can certainly see it.

Posted: 6/26/06 at 7:45amHow do you suppose one gets in touch with Anita Baker to make the suggestion? I tried googling her, but she doesn't seem to have a homepage that I can find, so I don't know where to start otherwise.
