Isn't it enough that we have toys being the basis for major motion pictures (Transformers, GI Joe, etc)?
I'm sure Shaiman and Wittman will write a catchy and clever score, but....why?
And more importantly, can it compete with "Mr. Potato Head - The Musical!"?

Posted: 6/2/09 at 8:42amHmmm...the American Girl movies have been pretty popular thus far but would the company want a big Broadway musical that will compete with the musicals at American Girl Place?

This is for a FILM not broadway:
Universal Pictures has made a big-bucks deal to acquire an untitled Mattel toy property for a ****live-action musical film**** to be produced by Craig Zadan and Neil Meron. The duo will reunite with the "Hairspray" team of Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman.
Live action mean people not animation. The article also specifically mentions: Monster Lore.

This is, essentially, the same article with a few additions
UNIVERSAL, MATTEL to add "a fresh twist to monster lore?"

Marc and Scott have actually already written a musical based on a Mattel doll...sorta. Livin' Dolls (1982) was a sort of cross between Barbie and Gidget.

Posted: 6/2/09 at 10:33amOh God! This MUST be the Malibu Stacy musical that Waylon Smithers has been working on for years! I saw a workshop at a small theater in Arizona a few years ago- "Sold Separately" had everyone in tears but if they tossed out the rest of the score in favor of a new Shaiman score? Well, we're talking PULITZER here people!

Joe, I'm so glad I'm not the only one who knows Sold Separately. Someone in another thread said the Phantom title song was the greatest duet in musical theatre, but they clearly haven't heard this.
I'm relieved this is a musical of the Barbie Unicorn Fairy Princess Cupcake type movie, instead of an actual show functioning as a toy commercial, which is what I originally thought based on the thread title.

I have long dreamed of hearing this number on the Tony Awards:
Smithers: Sold separately,
Sometimes I feel like I've been sold separately;
But out of the box I find you poseable..
Stacy: ..loveable..
Both: ..just like me.
