It obviously made a lasting mark

Saw it Friday. It was very much a throwback to the sort of high camp downtown shows that used to be very prevalent in the East Village several years ago (this is probably the fourth campy stage version of CARRIE that I've seen in the past 20 years, including the musical). This was a very solid effort by all involved, including Sherry Vine (Carrie), Keri Meoni (a hilariously ditzy Norma), and David Ilku (Mr. Morton) and some first rate special effect and puppetry work from Basil Twist.
Erik Jackson's adaptation of the novel does a good job of condensing the plot into two hours and Josh Rosenzweig's staging cleverly uses every inch of the cramped space (nice utilitarian set from Tobin Ost). My one complaint is that, for camp, the production was a bit too restrained, with several performers coming off a bit too naturalistically when these sorts of affairs always play better with a bit more scenery-chewing (Kate Goehring's Margaret White had NOTHING on Piper Laurie's brilliantly over-the-top performance in the film -- perhaps they should have gone for a drag performer in the role).
That aside, there were several laugh-out-loud moments that justified the trip (and the $18 price tag). Incidentally, it was announced before the show that the entire run was close to sold out, so if you have any interest in seeing this, act quickly.
