Would you recommend that I see the movie version of Rent even though I haven't seen the stage production? Or should I wait and see it on stage first?
I'm hesitant because I saw the movie Chicago first and then saw it on stage and was disappointed because the movie was so much better (IMO of course!)

YES!!!!!!!
That's just my opinion of course. I'm seeing it for the OBC. I never saw them on stage and I regret that, because I've often wanted to see the dynamics of a cast that originated their chracters.
P.S. The stage version is great as well. You won't be disappointed.

Wax Lion says that you will not be dissapointed with either, but you should definitly see the stage version first if you have the chance. Just keep in mind that the show is beautiful in it's spartan and minimalist representation as contrasted to the literal translation on the big screen. You've got a few good months ahead of you!

Posted: 6/13/05 at 1:08pmThey are two different mediums. For me, seeing something on stage is infinetely better than seeing it on a movie screen, because you feel like a part of it ! RENT on stage has this incredible energy that simply cannot be conveyed on screen. But then, the movie surely can expand many things that cannot be done on stage and be more visually exciting. It is a fantastic stage show, with a great story and a wondeful score and I am sure it will be a brilliant movie. I'd suggest to see it on stage first in order to feel the energy and familiarize with the story and the people and then see it on screen to get a bigger picture of the whole thing !

Dear Reader,
Yes by all means go see the movie version of "RENT". Partake in the live stage experience that now resides at the Nederlander and has been charming it's audiences with it's tale of junkies, performance artists, rock singers, drag queens and the overall East Village population and their struggle with life, love and disease.
Then I suggest you immerse yourself in everything and anything that has to do with this now pop culture phenomenon. Buy yourself a RENT T-shirt, Coffee Mug, Poster, OBC CD, Movie Poster, download the trailer for the movie and generally become one human, walking, talking RENTHEAD.
Your life, my dear friend simply will not be the same without it.
I speak from experience. Jonathan would have wanted it that way.

Marquise de Sade

Listen to the OBC. See the show live if you can. Read reviews of the movie when it comes out. Talk to people who have seen both - then decide.
You've got awhile to think about it.

Wax Lion would like to go on the record by saying that you are right, musicnmath. Even Big Daddy C hasn't seen a final cut yet (because post-production is lasting a better part of the summer). That's a moot point, though. The film, in my honest opinion (and I'm a *tad* biased), is everything that I hoped it would be and more. Of course, everyone reserves the right to a final and thorough judgement when the movie is released. Oh, and your farce is quite interesting, Marquise. The translation is lost somehow, though.

Wax Lion is not sensitive, just a bit confused. And yes, we Wax Lions have to take it easy near anything above 120 degrees. No toll house baking for us.

Dear Wax Lion,
I love your new look. The scarf goes well with your coloring. I want a Wax Lion of my very own. Do you have any siblings I can adopt?

Seems like the overall consesus is to see the stage version first if I can.... hopefully a production of Rent will come to the Chicagoland area before November.
Anyone know of one??

Posted: 6/13/05 at 2:05pmNo, there will be no production coming to Chicago, or anywhere else for that matter, before November. The only production currently running is the Broadway show at the Nederlander.

But let's hope that they DO restart the tour after November, and that is DOES stop in the Chicagoland area!
And, by that I mean anywhere in the state of Illinois, and the southern half of Wisconsin. LOL.
I think that, since its not possible to see the stage show before, that you should see the movie. And then see the stage show when you can. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

I can't wait for the rights to be released and high school productions start popping up.

Posted: 6/13/05 at 9:38pmi think you should definetely try to see the show live first. but if you can't, like most people said, DEFINETELY see the movie. i saw the movie of chicago before i saw the play and i was kind of disappointed myself. but i also like rent a lot more than chicago and dont think you'll be disappointed with it regardless. it will be a little different, but you can enjoy both ways :)
