Don't know if this has ever been asked before but what shows past and present do you think suit or suited the theatre that were in? This applies to Broadway, West End or any theatres across the respective countries.
Mine are:
Phantom of the Opera - Her Majesty's Theatre/Majestic Theatre
Les Mis - Palace Theatre
Mary Poppins - Prince Edward Theatre
Cats - New London Theatre
Wicked - Apollo Victoria/Gershwin Theatre
Sunset Boulevard - Adelphi Theatre.
Lion King - New Amsterdam Theatre.

We have a local musical that really fits our theatre. It's about this lady named Jenny Wiley, and they perform it at Jenny Wiley Theatre, which is an outdoor amphitheatre. It's sooo awesome.

I liked AIDA in the palace. Theatre is very royal, show is about rohyality.
I do like Avenue Q in the Golden. Theatre is gorgeous and majestic, and the show is like that, on the inside, lol.

Phantom (Majestic--the first thing I thought of)
Rent (Nederlander--they kind of designed it to fit, but the whole dirty "just below 42nd" thing works)
Spelling Bee (Circle in the Square--great size)
Ragtime (Ford Center--I remember thinking how perfect the theatre was even as a budding Broadway lover)
And as for shows I can think of right now that do NOT suit their theatre, I have to say The Drowsy Chaperone at the Marquis. It's not the end of the world, but it's such a shame for a show that pays homage to old Broadway. At least they were able to work it into a joke.

Picture update above:
Has anyone here been in the Las Vegas theater in hotel "the Venetian" that houses the Phantom of the opera? I saw a picture of the interior and it really looked spectacular.

Spelling Bee is in the perfect theatre.
Drowsy is probobly in the worst theatre for the show. It should be in an old classic theatre.

Posted: 11/4/06 at 11:28pmI agree with RENT, Spelling Bee and many others. And I would like to add Jacques Brell... in the Zipper Theatre. The theatre is so... bohmemian (that is the only word to describe the place), and the show honors that so much.

Posted: 11/4/06 at 11:31pmI thought the Marquis was great for WIW's sets with its moderness. But I don't think the size worked well for it, though.

Posted: 11/4/06 at 11:43pmTarzan is probably the show that suits its theatre the least. They have way to many partial view seats.

Posted: 11/5/06 at 12:54amUrinetown at the dilapidated old Henry Miller's Theater was a perfect fit. The show finally closed so they could tear down the place down!

Posted: 11/5/06 at 1:13amThe San Francisco production of Spelling Beee was in the Post Street theater, and that place was perfect. Rent in the Nederlander works very well, too.
It was awesome. - theaterkid1015

Of course Rent really fits.
Wicked fits the gershwin so much.
42nd street was great when it was at the old ford center

If nothing else, Wicked is the only show to come close to fitting the barn of the Gershwin.
Mary Poppins fits the Amsterdam well I think. The sets should be viewed in a huge theater, and there are certainly things that take place higher up so the balcony seats are fine.
I also think DRS fit the imperial. A perfect number of seats...and something about the sparkleness of it...it all just fit. *holds back tear*
Light in the Piazza was gorgeous at the Vivian Beaumont.
I think Sweeney was good at the Eugene O'Neill--maybe a slightly smaller theater would have been preferable, but the theater just had that dark atmosphere.
I want to say Phantom and the Majestic, but I'd be so biased since no other show has been there since I was 2.
And of course I agree with Bee, Q, and Rent.

Posted: 11/5/06 at 9:03amI have to say, there is something about the Walter Kerr that makes Grey Gardens work brilliantly in it. I have loved that theatre since doubt, and I love Grey Gardens in it.

THE WEDDING SINGER fits very nicely in the Al Hirshfeld
the theatre is comfy and cute, and the show is fun, so they go together nicely
SWEENEY was awesome in the Eugene O'Neill, like the theatre was rather dark and everything, so that was cool

Posted: 11/5/06 at 9:18amWhy does everyone dislike the Marquis? I think it's a very good theatre with good leg room and a convenient location. Drowsy has a good home.

Posted: 11/5/06 at 9:19amThe 97 revival of Sound of Music was perfect for the Martin Beck(Hirschfeld). Especially for the Wedding scene where tehy entered from the audience. The arches and Columns there made it seem like you were in a cathedral.

I agree with Sweeney and the O'Neil; the color scheme of the theatre perfectly complimented the show. Phantom as well; a show as "majestic" as the Phantom is perfect in a place called the Majestic. I thought Jersey Boys blended in nicely with the August Wilson as well. Oh, and I can't see Wicked playing anywhere else besides the Gershwin, even though I didn't like the Gershwin theatre at all. Way too modernized. I felt like I was in a mall going up all those escalators.
