SO - how do you guys and gals handle it when you're singing at an audition, be it a chorus call or an EPA or open call, whatever - and you crack very loudly and and/or have that awful phlegmy feeling and sing like you're gargling.?. Do you say something afterward? make a joke of it? pretend it didn't happen?
I'm just curious. It rarely happens to me - but today due to all the rain and allergies, and the early morning call, I hit a major clunker on my high note - (got there but cracked first) and I had to laugh about it when I was through. I remarked to the auditors something to the affect of "A little rusty for a rainy day, but you get the idea..." and laughed as I walked out of the room. That made me feel better. So what do you do?

EVERYONE will crack, sometimes at bad times like in an audition, but everyone knows that people do crack and it's something that's not a big deal to affect a song. I was wearing a hair mic for my Seussical show and had a really bad night cracking at least 4 times but people said they didnt notice because I kept going and just pretended it was in character or something like that. At an audition the directors usually will ignore the cracks if that was your only problem in the song..which isnt'a problem at all! :)

If they really want to hear that note again because you were just that good, they will call you back. And that doesn't answer your question so... yeah, I just keep going as if nothing happened.

I've cracked at auditions before... everybody has. When that happens to me, I just exclaim, "you wouldn't believe how long it took me to learn how to do that!" And everyone has a good laugh.
Once in awhile, I'll try the note again, but the above comment usually smooths everything out pretty well.

My perspective is from the other side of the desk.
Stuff happens. How you handle it is more important. Being able to accept it with a measure of grace and humor demonstrates a professional attitude far more successfully than someone who lets it get the best of them or knocks them off their pins. Auditors look for talent, sure, but we're also interested in performers' personal qualities, their spontaneity, and how they interact with people.
