Haha, nope.
I have a friend who is a software developer and I gave him this idea and he wants to know if it exists already.

Posted: 4/23/06 at 7:37pmThere are electronic tuners... you sing/play a pitch and it shows whether or not it is correct.

Posted: 4/23/06 at 7:51pmI forget who told me about it.. I *think* it was my chorus teacher last year who was explaining how at concerts they sometimes use a machine that when you sing into it, it corrects your pitch if you're off. I could be wrong though.

In the recording studio they use Antaras Auto tune ,industry standard even comes with Pro Tools, thats why the likes of Lindsay Lohan and Hillary Duff sounded like crap live on the AMA awards earlier this year. Made in the studio. There is other software for checking your pitch and to train your ear.Go to Google and type in pitch software. Here's a free one also for instruments. http://tuneit.free.fr/

A friend of mine has a game called Karaoke Revolution (for XBox or Playstation, or one of those) where you sing just as if you were doing Karaoke, but the way you win/earn points is by staying on pitch and in the correct key, etc. and it shows you on the screen if/when you go off pitch. I've never played, but my friend is in LOVE with it. I guess it most funny because he's 32!
Ah well...

Of COURSE there is. How do you think so many mediocre pretty girls make it in the pop industry?!
And why do you think people like Ashley Simpson lip sinc on tv. Because they can't REALLY sing. And that's why Britney Spears always sounds like crap when she does her one live ballad on her concerts.

Here's a link to an interesting report at NPR about software that helps singers find perfect pitch. It even has an audio demonstration. I wonder if technology like this will eventually be used real-time on Broadway? (Or is it already in use?)

if it were already in use, then the parts that were not correct pitch wise would sound robotic - no vibrato, no emotion...
the software corrects for pitch alone - not for things like breath, vibrato frequency, etc.
you'd know because the voice would suddenly change from human sounding to robotic! :)

You know little of what you speak...
There are 4 leading pitch correction technologies - and in the past 2 years, the technology has improved by a factor of 10.

Yes, these technologies are in use, every day, by the biggest stars, including bway.
The boxes and software sounds great, and nobody will ever know the difference.
Yes, the software can deal with breaths, pitch, dynamics and it can compensate for all kinds of flaws in a performance, in real time.
We use these technologies on stage and in cast albums and the best of the best use it to lock in or to raise the bar... I can't think of a major release that I've worked on in 10 years where we didn't use some kind of pitch correction. Lately, the trend is to tune everyone and everything... no reason not to. You don't lose anything... and with a great engineer, you'll never know.
And yes, the software compensates for vibrato and nuance and inflection and stuff like that. The "Streisand 10 cents sharp on the front edge of certain consonants" can be preserved (Eder does the same thing). The software can also strip an annoying vibrato away, and replace it with a more natural sound.
Will the tuning software make a bad singer into a good one? No. It won't solve phrasing (but we have tools to help that) and it won't take a poorly acted performance and make it flow, BUT -- for minor intonation issues, there are tools.
I'm not going to name names, but I have recorded more than a few superstars of the stage who very much needed tuning -- so we just did it. We don't make a thing out of it.
Is this fair? Is a Park Ave. cosmetic surgeon fair? Remember, the tools are in use by everyone, everywhere, so the best get better...
Will this help you with karaoke night? Too expensive for the amateur... for now.
In addition to the links I mentioned, there are many other lower cost/free solutions that do not have all the magic, but can help with pitch identification and ear training. Google it.
