This may have already been posted--mea culpas but I did a quick search and couldn't find it. And it's a great interview...
Some nice stuff on this about Bounce; the film of Sweeney Todd and the Beatles....
The interview will be available for 7 days and as a podcast.

Best part of the interview:
Sondheim: "I'm so used to polarized reactions to what I write that I feel comfortable when someone says (huge energy) 'OH, it's... WONDERFUL!!!!!!" or someone says (huge energy) 'OH, it's... GGGGHASTLY!!".
I was rolling on the floor at that - I never expected it from someone so calm and collected ALL the time.

As my typing clearly shows God has never spoken through me

I'm sure the avatar was one clue . . .
Its hillarious. The guys sounds like he's interveiwing the canon, not the writer.

Posted: 8/9/07 at 10:37pmI loved what he said about false rhymes. However, here's my question for old Stevie, "So what did you have to say to Steven Sater after Spring Awakening?"

Yeah there are definetly moments when I kinda cringed wondering how the interviewer could walk into that trap--like mentioning Sondheim's "true love experience" and Passion etc...
As for false rhymes--in the 1970s YMCA lyric writing lecture SOndheim mentioned pop music and false rhymes more and while he still says he doesn't care for them he also says he appreciates why they're valid and work well in pop music as opposed to theatre music. If he did stand up for Spring Awakening, etc, I believe he probably realizes that since it uses pop music form and idioms the false rhymes are expected....
(I admit that's largely how I personally feel on the subject)
