Spamalot's "The Song That Goes Like This" is about "sentimental songs that cast a magic spell" and that "start out soft and low and end up with a kiss," with a ton of key changes-- basically, big numbers that start out quiet and end up full-volume.
I heard that the song was based on "All I Ask Of You," but what are your favorite Songs That Go Like This?
My favorite is "Suddenly Seymour," but I think the song that best fits the description is "I Believe My Heart" from The Woman In White. "I Believe My Heart" almost sounds like a parody.

Posted: 2/28/09 at 6:59pmThat song's amazing and a definite STGLT except for the fact that it doesn't end with a kiss - just a lame-o girl-power I-don't-need-a-man-in-my-life button that nearly cheapens the whole song.

Posted: 2/28/09 at 7:24pm"I Will Never Leave You" from Side Show would totally be a Song That Goes Like This, only it doesn't end with a kiss. It's another one of those "lame-o girl-power I-don't-need-a-man-in-my-life" songs, I guess. (Though I kind of object to the idea that saying that a girl doesn't need a man in her life is lame...)

I agree. It's not lame.
If you have chocolate and movies, you're set to go.

Aw, that was cute, Charleston...
Another Song That Goes Like This is "Wheels Of A Dream" from Ragtime, except that I think it ends with Coalhouse making out with the car and Sarah getting jealous.

"I Believe My Heart" is also mine; I actually think that the SPamalot crew took a lot from Woman in White, or vice versa. Remember when Woman in White decided it needed a wedding added to the end of Act II for it's Broadway run (although that ending did eventually transfer over from London).
Also love: "Too Much in Love to Care"!

How could I forget Elton John's AIDA? "Elaborate Lives" and "Written In The Stars," anyone?
In Aspects Of Love, the requisite Webber Song That Goes Like This would probably be "Seeing Is Believing."
I was going to say "You Are My Home" from The Scarlet Pimpernel, but then I remembered that song was between a brother and sister...

"I Am Changing" from Dreamgirls starts out a bit quiet and goes into full belt with instruments blaring.
"Why God Why" from Miss Saigon starts quietly, but picks up later on in the song.

Not anymore. In Pimpy 3.0, the licensed version, it's sung by Percy and Marguerite at the wedding.

Posted: 2/28/09 at 8:49pmOh, I know, but it's not a big "Song That Goes Like This" style swelling music full-out belting-at-the-end version.

Technically...SP 2.0! (with York/Sills)
"Oh, I know, but it's not a big "Song That Goes Like This" style swelling music full-out belting-at-the-end version. "
Not on any official recording, but it was actual very beautifully done and why it wasn't a ginormous belt-er at the end, it ended with a full chorus (simialr to how the Reprise of Believe was in SP 1.0).
Beautiful song, but I don't know I liked the original version better - except for the brother/sister-esque, and obviously the new-er ending!

Pretty much every JRB song starts out quiet and gets louder.
Also: "If I Told You" from The Wedding Singer, "In His Eyes" from Jekyll and Hyde.

Posted: 2/28/09 at 11:58pmI Am What I Am from La Cage. A really good example of soft beginning and huge build up although it definitely doesn't end with a girl power moment. I must say though that I much prefer this song when I hear a woman sing it.

Posted: 3/1/09 at 1:14amActually, A Change In Me, from Beauty and the Beast (not the Toni Braxton version, the Ashley Brown version) ends with a major "look at me belt" finish. So, i guess that one fits the bill...

Definitely agree with "Too much in love to care" from Sunset. Probably the best example.
Also Last night of the world from Miss Saigon

Oh yeah-- "Till There Was You" definitely has that 'sing it in your face while we both embrace' factor to it.
Also, "I've Never Been In Love Before" from Guys and Dolls.
