I wasn't sure what to expect, I knew the basic story line and listened to the cast recording once about a year ago.. Not liking Rent that much and hearing the comparisons I was ready to be indifferent. On a whole I liked the show...much more than Rent but that's not hard to do. I'm not the demographic...male early 40's.

I think it was a brilliant idea not to update the book from the 1890's. If they did the show could have been dismissed as just another teen angst show, a "Breakfast Club" with music. By not updating you see that teenagers have the same problems today as in 1890's Germany. But by the same token, I knew exactly what was coming. Nothing surprised me in the show. About the only thing I wasn't sure of was whether Melchior dies or not the rest of the story was fairly predictable.

I enjoyed the entire cast as a whole. About the only one I didn't like was Steffi D. Her performance reminded my of a bad high school production player. I especially liked Kyle Riabko as Melchior.

As far as the show goes being in previews, a few lighting glitches, one forgotten line but nothing major. Sound was great as was the scenery.

Oh, and one more thing...this won best choreography? Are you f-ing kidding me? They looked like they were doing the same moves from a bad SNL skit years ago with Mike Meyers as Dieter. And it kept on repeating and repeating. I saw Legaly Blonde here in SF...didn't like it all that much...but it deserved the Tony from choreography way before Spring Awakening.

I was at the same performance and pretty much agree with you, especially about the choreography. Loved Steffi D, though.
