Hello there,
I am taking my wife to see Saturdays Matinee performance at 2pm of A Steady Rain, for her birthday. She is a Massive Hugh Jackman fan and would love to either meet him or get a pic or autograph. She is also an artist and is currently finishing off a portrait of Hugh and his wife, in the hope that she will be able to present it to him on Saturday.
So, Id like a bit of advice please. Being a Broadway novice!!
Is it best to wait by the stage door before the performance, or after, and roughly how long before or after?! If the performance begins at 2 - would mid-day suffice? or afterwards, just wait by the stage door....and where abouts is the stage door situated at the theater. Is there any specific protocol - aside from manners?!
Thanks so much for any help and or advice anyone can give.
Richi
Good luck is all I can say!
1. No one can even tell you if they WILL stage door. If they DO stagedoor, don't expect too much personal time. ASK before you thrust anything at them or take pictures.
2. It is considered rude (and stalking) to stage door BEFORE a show. THey are on thier way to work and need to get there on time and sign in and prepare.

Hugh is very gracious and I would guess he will stagedoor regularly. But remember that on a 2-show day, some actors choose to stay in and relax between shows to reserve energy. There will be barriers set up, so try to position yourself as close as you can to the door. Have your camera at the ready and please be polite. Good luck!
I usually don't recommend stage-dooring before a performance, but in this case if you really, really want to meet him then you might as well do it before the show since we all know the crowds afterwards are going to be insane (and probably still a little busy beforehand too).
There are some videos on youtube of people at the stage door of The Boy From Oz before the show and Hugh was really friendly and gracious.

As the show is in early previews, it might be difficult to predict when the actors will come in - they could come early to rehearse any changes to the show that are being considered.
People expect this to be a very crowded stagedoor before or after the performances. Hugh is always very gracious at the stagedoor, but oftentimes the theatre security people will steer him on how to manage his time at the stagedoor.
If you cannot hand him the art portrait personally, maybe you could ask the stagedoor staff to give it to his personal staff, if he has any.
Good luck! It is going to be a crazy scene -- don't come away too disappointed if you and your wife are unable to meet him personally. His performance in the show is, after all, what we want him to share with us!

Hugh will be out after every performance, no doubt.
I have to say I'm honestly shocked at how nice this thread remained.
