I'm going to see Mr. Minchin at New World Stages next week. I've never seen him before, but I've seen enough youtube clips to realize how freakin' hilarious and talented this Aussie is!

(oops, sorry I didn't realize you posted til now)
but yeah, it was a great comedy/music cabaret show, with just Tim and his piano. He's a virtuoso on the baby grand, by the way, and has a great singing voice. Most importantly though is his often VERY dark sense of humor, mixed with a good amount of self-deprecation. stuff like: not being able to imagine being with another woman than his wife, even if she dies (he would prefer if she got a degenerative disease). His songs are hilarious and very smart and absurd (absurdity being my personal favorite thing to see on stage). He's also extremely foul-mouthed, which I love too!
but yeah, he has a catalog of songs that are on youtube, such as "Inflatable You" (about his love affair with a blowup doll), "Rock n' Roll Nerd" (his opening number), and his two political anthems: "Why Not Not Eat Pigs Together" and "Take Your Canvas Bags When You Go To THe Supermarket." He also recites a truly twisted "poem" called "Angry [Feet]."
again, he's all over youtube, but it's all the more funny seeing him live (he's no stranger to ad-libbing and playing with the audience).

Excellent assessment, Chris!
I loved the show too. I actually could sit there and listen to him play piano and sing all night, though. He sounds a little like Elton John. (his voice and piano).

thank you Jane.
& I was lucky enough to be in the theater during Tim's soundcheck. He played a totally serious and very moving cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah." and when he finished he said something like, "and that's the sound of Jeff (Buckley) rolling in his grave."

LOL! He really is a nice guy, isn't he?
One thing I loved about him was how he handled late comers. I was watching the first preview, and two women came in ONE HOUR late. They were sitting right in front of the stage. As soon as they sat down, Tim walked over to them, and spent the next ten minutes ripping them a new one! It was fabulous! And I heard he did something similar in the next show when people came in late.

Posted: 3/10/08 at 3:09pmhe did do something like that when I was there. One guy in the second row got up during his first number, then came back a few minutes later, and yeah, Tim ripped him a new one. XD he suggested the guy was a cokehead and that his date was secretly involved with the guy on the other side of her.
