Telecharge.com vs. TicketMaster.com

I would MUCH prefer getting tickets from the Box Office. I just prefer dealing with people rather than a damn website. Plus I HATE having to pay all of the service charges.

Sorry to keep beating this horse, but I'm really interested in how things have changed since the internet came along.

Back in the 1980s, when I first became a two-or-three-times-a-year theatregoer, I purchased all tickets via mail order. All ads in the NYT Arts/Leisure section had addresses to mail to. ("List alternate dates" they always said!)

But nowadays it seems that theatres don't want you to use mail order (although it's still available -- I still order all tickets through the mail). Addresses aren't listed, only the phone number and website.

So for ChittyBangBang, for example, the mailorder and boxoffice is still not open yet, even though they're selling tickets via the website. Am I to believe that the theatre is holding back its best tickets so that mailorder and in-person people will get the best seats when the boxoffice finally opens?

I'd have to go with telecharge.... ticketmaster and I don't get along very well.

Guys, where are some of the places you find the discount codes? I know of broadwaybox.com. Where else?

For discounts, in addition to broadwaybox, there are Playbill.com and Theatremania.com.

I also have tons sent to me directly by the shows themselves, the Times, Telecharge, Smarttix, Ticket Central et al.

Margo,

Are you saying that when I go to the box office and the guy in the window looks at his computer for tickets, he's looking at a different set of tickets than somebody who's on the ticketmaster or telecharge website?

And what about the guy at the ticketmaster office? Is he looking at the same tickets as the box office guy?

re: Telecharge.com vs. TicketMaster.com#34

Yes, as I explained, the box office guy has access to released/unused house seats and other seats that are simply not for sale via telecharge or ticketmaster. The services only get the seats that the box office gives them to sell, not ALL of the seats available. More than once, I have actually gone online and looked up the best available seats for a given performance, left my office and walked over to the theatre (I work a block from the theatre district) to buy those tickets at the box office to avoid all the fees and surcharges and been pleasantly surprised at being offered my choice of MUCH better seats than telecharge had for sale.

For example the best seats telecharge had for Night Mother was row K off to the side, but when I went by the box office ten minutes later I was offered my choice of fourth row or sixth row center. Another time for another show the best available seats from telecharge were in the 12th row but when I went by the box office I got 2nd row center -- when I told the box office person of my surprise, she said "Oh, we don't give telecharge all of our best seats." Recently when I went online to check availability for Sam Shepard's The God of Hell, the online ticket site informed me that several dates that I was interested were soldout; when I went by the box office an hour or two later, I asked about those same dates and the person there told me that she had tickets for all of those performances.

Thanks very much Margo!

I've always wondered about this, and now I know someone with first-hand proof.

Telecharge is so so much better.

However, the box office isn't always the best bet. For Aida, on ticketmaster I could get row E center orch, but at the box office, the best was N center orch.
