Okay, just a joke.
Passed by the now vacant Barrymore today and saw pannels for THE LIFE up in the lobby. I know that it's from years ago (ticket prices were $75). Just thought it was funny....like that time the Spider Woman advertisment was up in Shubert Alley next to James Earl Jones in On Golden Pond....

Posted: 5/3/06 at 11:13pmIt closed in 1998, and the ticket prices were $75. Look at how far we've come. and why do they still have 8 year old pannels up?

Posted: 5/4/06 at 5:17amThat's still a while for it to be sitting there. I would think one of the new musicals would grab it up.

Posted: 5/4/06 at 11:21amAwwhhhh... good times! I saw THE LIFE about 20 times. Fabulous show!

Posted: 5/4/06 at 3:21pmIt would have to be a more intimate musical production much like Ring o fire or Sweeney. Its really a small theater.

Posted: 5/4/06 at 5:09pmThat'd be cool if Grey Gardens went there. But what is this David Hare play everyone is talking about? Is it STUFF HAPPENS or another one?

Posted: 5/4/06 at 6:55pmYeah, that's what I thought too Munk, but someone said that it wouldn't open until next spring. There's no way that theater is going to sit dark for a year.

Posted: 5/4/06 at 7:11pmIs the Barrymore a small venue? I really am hoping that Grey Gardens get's a smaller house. Putting it in a larger theater would be a big mistake.
#14re: The Life: Barrymore Theatre's Next Tenant?
Posted: 5/4/06 at 7:26pmThe Barrymore is mid-sized.

Posted: 5/4/06 at 7:41pmI heard that the Little Dog Laughed was going to get a broadway transfer, did anyone else hear that. If so, then maybe it could take the theater. Or maybe since Trip to the Bountiful won so many awards, producers may consider giving it a tranfer, as the the reason it wasn't planning on getting one was to due the lack of available theaters.

"The Life" was a FANTASTIC, FANTASIC show! Saw it in July of 1997 and then the final closing performance in June of 1998. I happened to be in NYC on a theatre vacation and read in the paper, quite by accident, that "The Life" was closing the next day and my friend and I raced from our hotel to the box office to see if we could get tickets. We were front row Mezz. That closing performace was incredible!!! Lillias White literally stopped the show and got a standing O when she sang her song "The Oldest Profession." Lillias and Pamela Isaacs got a standing O when they sang "My Friend."
Chuck Cooper and Lillias both deserved The Tony Awards that they both received. It's too bad that the terrific score and book were overlooked at Tony time. It was nominated, but didn't win. The show was nominated for Best Musical. But, lost to "Titanic."
