Hey chums! I have never read this book, or seen the play (or the opera, or the musical), although I have heard it's a great story.
I have just been cast as the Fox and I was wonderful if anyone can tell me a basic rundown of what he does and how "main" he is and other such useful information. The version my production is doing it the one that played off-broaday a while back. That's all I know! I'm in the process of reading the english-translated version of the original Saint-Exupery book and any useful tidbids would be MOST appreciated! Thanks so much!
One more little detail, from what I've read of the book, the aviator/pilot is also the narrator, but in this play there are no/few narrative lines in which the character speaks directly to the audience as in the book. That makes the adaptation stray a little, I presume, and I just thought I'd point that out!!
Wasn't Bob Fosse the "snake" in the movie version?

He was! I have that movie. Love the Fosse.
Anyway - I'm not sure about the play, but in the book, the Little Prince meets up with the Fox and "tames" him over a period of time. Eventually, the Little Prince must leave him. The Fox gives him a secret (which I think is the "What's essential is invisible to the eye" thing). That's...all I remember.

Make sure you're reading Katharine Woods' translation, not the "new" one.. the new one is awful.
Congratulations!! The fox is a wonderful character - he has some of the most-quoted lines from the book.

I saw the opening of the opera in Houston and it was really amazing. I think you should watch the Bob Fosse movie in which Gene Wilder plays the fox. He does a really good job!
first off - congrats
second - definitely read the book - it's my fave
character wise - the movie is a great resource. pretty much the little prince has come from his planet to earth. the narrator is a pilot who's engine breaks down in the desert. it's there that he meets the little prince who tells him of his travels. one of the stories is of the fox. when he first meets the fox - he is a wild creature but he convinces the little prince to tame him. when the prince leaves the fox explains that you never truly leave the things you have tamed, they stay with you in your heart forever.
hope that helps!!! and good luck!!
LUCKY! I love that part! The book is a great read, and the fox is definetly my favorite character. Despite everyone else's recomendations, i'm going to advise against watching the movie. if you watch the movie version or see on stage a play you're going to be acting it, you risk affecting your own performance. But once you're done definetly see it. It's a great movie.

Classic. Beautiful. Should be required.
And I agree with Gypsy - don't see the film til you've done the role - but then see it and enjoy!
THE LITTLE PRINCE IS MY ALL TIME FAVORITE BOOK....NO LIES....ONE OF MY EX-GIRLFRIENDS GAVE IT TO ME FOR MY BIRTHDAY ONE YEAR AND CALLED ME HER "LITTLE PRINCE"...I STILL HAVE THAT COPY ON MY BEDSIDE TABLE. ANYWAY IT'S A GREAT, GREAT BOOK! ENJOY PLAYING THE FOX!!
i shudder at the title!! I was in it as the title role...and it was the worst experience of my theater career!! it was so disorganized and it was so poorly written and we went through so many revisions...and i only had 2 rehersals prior to the first performance...in front of critics!! i didn't think it could get any worse..until the rest of the cast dropped..having only 2-3 people in it, and they haRdly showed up to rehearsals...i hated the story b/c of my experiences...hope it doesn't ruin anyone elses experiences...
