Hi Everyone! I just got a call back for this show at my University. I was called back for the part of Mae, but when looking through the script I found contrasting songs that the character sings. I found one copy that said she sings "Her is" with Prez, and another one that says Gladys sings that one with Prez. Anyone got any ideas?!
Thanks!

Posted: 4/7/05 at 1:25amThere are two "Her Is" in the show. Mae sings the one with him either right before or right after the "Once a Year Day" scene. I musically directed the show, and still can't help out out much more than that. Sorry!

Posted: 4/7/05 at 5:55pmThe score is incredibly tuneful, memorable, and in my opinion, smart. The original start, especially Haney, Raitt, and Paige all gave top rate performances. The movie is pretty faithful and vibrant, with Doris Day in great voice. And, it will always be the show that gave Shirley Maclaine her rise to fame, when she went on at the last minute for a sidelined Carol Haney. I don't think the revival will be able to live up to these things though.

Let's get with it, okay?
It was the first Broadway musical choreographed by Bob Fosse. His work blew everybody away, especially on "Steam Heat," a true show-stopper if there ever was one. His stuff was new, fresh, exciting and fun.
Shows are sometimes more than the book or cast album indicate.

PJ GAME was a big hit because it had a lively "pop" oriented score ("Hey There" was a hit by the time it opened - remember this was the days of the hit parade, before Rock 'n'Roll happened), it had a cohesive story (for its day) and opened at the end of a rather weak season with only one other hit (KISMET - an operetta). It ushered in new talent (Adler & Ross, Bob Fosse, producer Harold S. Prince) and was based on a hit novel. Sure it may seem dated and simplistic now, but it was pretty much state of the art in 1954.
I'm maybe not too objective - I grew up seeing the movie on TV and my parents had the Doris Day soundtrack album. Later we also got the Broadway cast Lp as well.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

There once was a Man,
who loved a woman.
Loved her enough to start the Trojan War.
They say that nobody every loved as much as he,
BUT ME.....I love you more!

My ears just started bleeding at the memory...
Perhaps Charlotte D'Amboise could play Gladys or Babe!
