Guy de Maupassant 8/5/1850 - July 6, 1893 French novelist and short-story writer, my favs “The Diamond Necklace” & Boule de Suif (tr. “Ball of Fat”) fr which the film “Stage Coach” is adapted. As brilliant as the film is, the story is 1 of the most brilliant short stories, & the last page makes me cry every time!), a very compelling writer.

1998 The Broadhurst Theatre temporarily became part of the comedy club circuit as Jerry Seinfeld presented his I'm Tellling You for the Last Time for ten performances in five nights. The comic known for his high-pitched "What's up with that?" style and his television sitcom "Seinfeld" would perform some of his best known routines then retire the material, apparently never to do any of the jokes again.

1924 - The comic strip Little Orphan Annie debuted in the New York Daily News. Annie and her little dog, Sandy, were creations of cartoonist Harold Gray. His work would come to life in the Broadway and film adaptations of Annie a half-century later -- to great success.
1962 Actress Marilyn Monroe was found dead in her Los Angeles home at age 36. Her death was ruled a probable suicide from an overdose of sleeping pills.
1977 All Broadway marquee lights are dimmed tonight in honor of actor Alfred Lunt who died two days earlier. This is only the third time up to that point that such an action has been taken.
1984 Stage star Richard Burton dies today at the age of 58 of a stroke. A well-respected stage and film star, Burton was the original King Arthur opposite the Guinevere of Julie Andrews in the Lerner and Loewe musical, Camelot. Burton's film credits include Cleopatra and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? He also appeared on Broadway replacing Anthony Perkins in Equus.
2000 Actor Alec Guinness died at age 86.
