More sad news.
89, what a long life -- hope it was a happy one.

I've been candid that Betty was difficult to work with, which I repeat here only to avoid the appearance of hypocrisy.
I've also said she was amazing on stage, in APPLAUSE and in a summer tour of WONDERFUL TOWN (where she and I worked together briefly). Few stars could carry a major musical without being able to actually sing or dance. Such was Miss Bacall's brilliance that she played iconic, vehicle roles with great aplomb!
She was that rare creature: a genuine character. And she will be missed.

The last real star of her era.
This is an awful week.

Posted: 8/12/14 at 8:29pmI met her in 1983. I was at a Liza concert in Boston and she and Mia Farrow were standing in front of the theatre afterwards. I was collecting autographs at the time so I walked up to the two of them and asked them to sign my program. Lauren signed it immediately, but Mia hesitated and looked all put-upon, etc. Lauren Bacall just looked at her and said, "Oh Mia, sign the damn program!" And she did. I still have it.

This is virtually the same clip, but it's a bit longer. But, it has the line: Dwayne: "I got a date." Margo: "Bring "him" along! I imagine that was a bit daring for 1973.

RIP Lauren.
Sadly, deaths like hers and Robin's usually come in threes. I'm afraid to see who's next

...I think this threesome began with Elaine Stritch.
Elaine.
Robin.
Lauren.
RIP, all.

Posted: 8/12/14 at 9:50pmShe was such a classy lady, and will be now with Bogey once again. And, I want to agree Elaine Stritch started all of this, so we don't have another death coming.

GavestonPS - I hope you didn't trip rushing to your computer to type the above. A gentleman wouldn't post a catty remark. Did you know Lauren Bacall well enough to call her Betty?

Elaine Stritch died nearly a month ago (July 17), so she doesn't count. The death-in-threes has to occur within the same week span. I would say Jim Brady (who died last week) was the first, Williams the second, and Bacall the third.

Posted: 8/12/14 at 10:18pmYou know, I hear her name and I think of two things, both musical theatre references: "Lauren Bacall me, anything goes, to make me fantastic, I have to be Rainbow High...." And of course Bacall's sarcastic but brilliant "Welcome to the theatre" from "Applause".

"The death-in-threes has to occur within the same week span."
Oh, well, if those are the official rules...
"I would say Jim Brady (who died last week) was the first, Williams the second, and Bacall the third."
How does Brady fit into the mix? Aren't they supposed to have something remotely in common other than being dead?
