Not sure if this was already posted:
"Idina Menzel, who won a Tony Award last season for her performance in Stephen Schwartz's Wicked, will present the first nine 2005 Tony Awards.
The official Tony Awards website — located at www.tonyawards.com — will offer exclusive live footage of the first nine awards, which will be presented at 7 PM ET at Radio City Music Hall on June 5. Those awards include Best Orchestrations, Best Lighting Design of a Play, Best Lighting Design of a Musical, Best Costume Design of a Play, Best Costume Design of a Musical, Best Scenic Design of a Play, Best Scenic Design of a Musical as well as the Best Regional Theatre Award (Theatre de la Jeune Lune of Minneapolis, MN) and the Lifetime Achievement Award (playwright Edward Albee)."

Does that mean that she will be shown in the CBS broadcast?
Living on Long Island right now stinks, we don't get NY1 OR TV Guide Channel.

Damn. I was hoping she'd present Best Actor in a Musical to Butz.
But they always have the presenter come out during the telecast to introduce the footage from earlier. So she will be seen, thankfully.

Posted: 6/3/05 at 3:38pmThough she may be on the telecast to announce the nine winners, the regional theatre and lifetime achievement awards. They usually do a quick montage of the earlier ceremony on the telecast itself and it's usually introduced by whomever hosted that ceremony.

Posted: 6/3/05 at 3:55pmThanks for the "heads up"! We'll be watching the web cast- can't wait to see Idina's dress! I think it is a shame that these very important awards are no longer shown as part of the network broadcast- what is a show without great lighting, costumes, etc?

I can't believe they're not going to let Albee accept his award during the broadcast. This man is unarguably one of our greatest playwrights, and he's being shuffled off to the sidelines. Inexcusable.

Posted: 6/4/05 at 11:43amI was just think the same thing, DGrant. How rotten is that! He so deserves the award, but that won't even put him on the telecast. Sucks!

I actually do understand the whole commercial aspect of this enterprise, and don't hold it against them for wanting to 'push their product', as it were. I just sort of try to think that at least the country gets exposed to this form of entertainment for a change. But this decision removes any pretense that it is in ANY WAY about theatre.
As I said before, I really do find it inexcusable. It's the LIFETIME ACHEIVEMENT award, for god's sake - if that doesn't merit at least SOME attention, then nothing else does.

Posted: 6/4/05 at 1:44pmIf this is the same time as the pre-shows I might have to have my computer on my lap in front of the TV! :) Talk about needing to multi-task...

I have a feeling that the pre-show coverage on the TVGuide channel is just going to be red carpet interviews and all that mishigas you see on the E! network for Oscars. While that's going on, Idina will be presenting awards to the creators of the shows.
Remember those great behind-the-scenes videos shown around the presentation of each of those awards when PBS covered them? I think we'll ALL be missing that.
A click for life.

Posted: 6/4/05 at 6:12pmThis has nothign to do with anything, BUT: Whoever is going to win this year's Tony for Best Actress/Musical is goign to be decided based on who performs off key this year, since that seems to be the criteria from the past few years. Christina Applegate might have a shot afterall!

Get rid of Aretha Franklin performing, and you'd have room for these very important awards. Shows would not exist without these very important elements. Are these people out of their minds? Last year with Mr. Bennett and Ms. Blige, now The Franklin. When will the cast of "The Light in the Piazza" be performing on the Grammy's or AMerican Music Awards? Until then, these "performers" should stick to those kinds of award shows, let the Broadway community have it's one night of aired glory, without interruption. Sorry...

I KNOW I've already said this a couple of times, but I just have to say it again:
IT IS INSANE NOT TO GIVE EDWARD ALBEE HIS LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD DURING THE NATIONAL BROADCAST! My heart weeps for those who purport to be representing theatre in America if this snubbing takes place.

It's awful because the design awards and the lifetime acheivement awards are not insignificant awards...and some of us DO care about them!!! Designers already have to suffer through a lack of recognition -how many people have favorite designers like they do favorite actors or directors? And yet design is such a part of the storytelling of a show!
And lifetime acheivement? How can you NOT show that on TV! I mean, even the OSCARS do that!
*sigh*
