Tonya Pinkins' voice

Posted: 8/15/04 at 10:53pmMy apologies if this has already been addressed on the board. I saw Caroline a couple weeks before the Tonys and noticed that it seemed like Tonya Pinkins was having a hard time with her voice. It sounded scratchy when she belted hard notes and really sounded like she was injuring herself (especially during "Lot's Wife"). It was the same way when I watched her on the Tonys. Is this how she usually sounds? Or is there something wrong with her vocal cords?

Posted: 8/15/04 at 10:55pmI saw her with my sister a week before the Tonys and we thought that she was sick. And she had to leave because she was sick right after the Tonys. But I think that's how she's supposed to sound because she got a standing ovation at the end of the show.

Posted: 8/15/04 at 10:55pmShe was the same way when I saw it a few months ago. She just has a messed up voice and can't scream the notes so that they sound right.

Posted: 8/15/04 at 11:06pmShe is performing an incredibly taxing show eight times a week and refusing to give up matinees. This is endurance like nothing we've seen in a while and unfortunately her endurance is not going to last very while and we can only pray that the long term damage she has no doubt caused will not deprive her of her gorgeous voice.

Posted: 8/15/04 at 11:08pmI saw her last Wednesday and she didn't seem to be having any vocal issues at all. She sounded phenomenal.

Posted: 8/16/04 at 12:18amI saw (and heard) Pinkins this past Saturday (the 14th) in "Caroline," and she sounded the best she ever has in the 5 times I've seen the show (going back to its run at the Public Theatre). Big, on-pitch, sustained notes and soft, floating, high notes--her voice did everything it needed to. And, yes, she makes her voice rough, harsh, and sharp when it needs to be for dramatic coloring.
