What do you think will be the toughest catagory for the TONY'S this year? One that might go in any direction...discuss.

Possibly Best Score, or Best Actor in a musical.

Leading Actor: All of the following things listed aren't problems, but they are all things to consider.
Michael C: REALLY great in ST, but he just won a Tony for Assassins.
John Lloyd Young: ALSO AMAZING!!! Male breakout artist of the year, sounds like Franki Valli. But does that make him an impersonator or an actor. (I want him to win!)
Harry C. Jr.: Classic recording artist, crooner voice, sexy. But is he good enough for it?
Bob Martin: Very funny, but doesn't sing at all in a category with 4 other STELLAR musicians. Also wrote the book, so maybe will get that award.
Stephen Lynch: Very funny, not likely to win, but could get the WOW HE'S FUNNY AND KINDA CUTE vote.

Posted: 5/16/06 at 5:12pmI'd have to say Lead Actor in a musical as well. The battle between Cerveris vs. JLY...

Oof, I don't understand how this should effect whether or not a person should get a Tony. So what if he got one a couple seasons ago, if his performance was deserving of the award, he shouldn't be snubbed just because he won one already.

I don't care if he's great or not, you can't tell me that Tony voters never take into account that a performer has already one a Tony award and very recently at that. I am not saying this will prevent him from winning, I am saying it's a possible thought.

I don't know about this. As much as I would love KELLI to win, it's not going to happen. Pretty much, Patti has it in the bag, LaChanze didn't even come close to touching her in my opinion.

Posted: 5/16/06 at 5:22pmI really would like to see JLY and Lachanze take it, but I have a feeling that Michael Cervis and Patti Lupone will take it.

Posted: 5/16/06 at 5:24pmAs much as i love Kelli O'Hara and i think she should have won best actress for her work as Clara in Piazza, the role of Babe is not challenging at all. Chita is great, but she is playing herself, why isn't Maria Friedman nominated for her outstanding work in WIW? Amy Spanger didn't get nominated for her work in TWS, the Tonys are bull****! well, im still happy TWS has several nominations including best musical and actor.

Posted: 5/16/06 at 5:25pmI'm aware a lot of people think this, but from a Tony voters standpoint, I acknowledge the category is called "Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical", the singing is part of the performance. LaChanze just isn't up to par musically with Patti, Sutton, or Kelli, or even Chita, lol (I don't think Chita should have been nominated, but I use her for my point.) I happen to know one of the Tony voters, and they personally didn't care for LaChanze's performance in TCP either.

"the role of Babe is not challenging at all"
I thought we decided that it's impossible to say what is and isn't challenging. For the record muscle, it's challenging to play ANY part on Broadway while staying on pitch the entire time. Perfect pitch doesn't just flow naturally you know, you have to control your vocal chords.

Posted: 5/16/06 at 5:29pmThis relates only a little, but what about Best Featured Actress in a Musical? I remember really liking Megan Lawrence in Les Mis and reading about how popular she was in Pajama Game. She seems underappreciated nonetheless. Does she stand a chance?

Thanks, blaxx...I tend to do that...spell things wrong that is.
I'd really love to see Michael take it, but my money's on Manuel. Toughest Category though might be score. Or book...there are some heavy hitters there.

Manoel? I'm confused, if you're referring to Manoel Felciano and Michael Cerveris...they're in two different categories anyway...

Muscle- Just because when your glorious Bombay Dreams didn't win anything, and now TWIW, doesn't mean the Tony's are bull. It means that you and the Tony's have very different taste in theater.

minute- That's another tough category. I don't know if she stands a chance of winning, but she certainly could do some damage by taking someone else's needed votes.
Nick- As far as book goes, it's pretty much between JB and TDC. As far as score, I think it's between TWS AND TDC. Featured Actor could be a tough one though.
