#2Nick and Nora...
Posted: 5/22/03 at 8:53pmHey, Mr. Roxy...my very first broadway show I went to I wanted it to be Nick & Nora because Joanna Gleason was in it, and I had recently watched her in the INTO THE WOODS on PBS, and fell in love with her immediately. I didn't care what the show was about, I just wanted to see it. I was in 9th grade at the time, and went with family. They didnt want to see it, and we saw "Park Your Car in Harvard Yard" instead. I was promised that we would go back and see it, but as we all know...the show closed soon after it opened. I own the cd, and don't think the songs are bad at all, and enjoy listening to it. Was Joanna Gleason fabulous??? Was the show really the mess it was said to be? And most importantly...who was the killer?:)
#3Imaginary Friends
Posted: 5/22/03 at 9:26pmI have seen very few flops but most recently I am still having nightmares about Imaginary Friends.
#4Carrie
Posted: 5/22/03 at 9:32pmI managed to actually get a glimpse of one of the more famous flops of the 20th Century, Carrie: The Musical. The flaws are blatant, particularly in the book. I think that if it was put in different hands, it might have been successful, because parts of the score are very catchy ("In") or spine tingling ("Carrie," "And Eve Was Weak," and "Unsuspecting Hearts") and the cast was pretty good, too. I heard that the book from London would have worked better.

I don't quite agree with the "train wreck" assessment for Nick & Nora. I saw it on a Saturday matinee before closing. By the time it had opened, it was slick and professional, just inert and underbaked. Bostwick and Gleason, while both talented and glamorous, couldn't quite electrify the material. (And I remember Faith Prince, pre-Guys & Dolls, walking away with the reviews). Also, the show looked and felt empty - borrowing from Frank Rich for a second, "Boom Chicka Boom" had the lead singer backed up by "two, count 'em, two" dancers. As always, Charles Strouse contributed a pretty good score, but to no avail.

I started a great thread about this very subject on that other board, and had some great responses, stories, etc. Ah, the lost material floating out there in cyberspace is mind-boggling.
My list:
THE FIVE O'CLOCK GIRL
LEGS DIAMOND

I would call this a train wreck but a real train wreck has more energy and momentum. However, Norbert Butz was great and worth staying for.
