I was wonderin' if the movie "TRICK" (1999) starring Christian Campbell, J.P. Pitoc
and Tori Spelling could be turn into a campy off- Broadway musical. Ive seen the movie version in 1999 and I thought then , that It would be a good musical, since its about a gay composer ,an obssesed "Gypsy" fan , his one night stand "trick" and his female f*ghag (who is trying to make it as a Chorus Girl .. )I was actually listening to the movie soundtrack the other day and I thought,, Hey this could work !

Any thoughts?

As long as Ms. Coco still gives that fantastic monologue about meeting Marc and the eyeful.. IT BURNS! LOL.

That endless, poorly delivered monologue is the one moment in the film that doesn't work for me, Grace.

I love this movie.

It could be cute. But I would rather see a musical of Beautiful Thing on Broadway.

I love Trick... and Ms. Coco Peru's monologue was one of the better moments of the film, I think. And Tori Spelling's monologue at the diner about the sh*t guy and her cheese fries. Priceless!

I love gay cinema of questionable quality as much as the next guy but Trick is based around one premise that barely holds out for a 90-minute movie, let alone a musical. I just don't think it would be interesting watching people singing about trying to have sex.

Although the Tori Spelling role would be fun to cast, and I do like Ms. Coco Peru, there are better choices.

Mister Matt- "Beautiful Thing " is a play now.. I think I saw an ad about this when I was in L.A. (this March , when I saw that atrocious "Wicked " LA Productions) , but not a musical...

"Trick" the movie ,itself is like a musical with songs specifically written to work within the story... Like Como Te gusta mi pinga ? (that song was a riot !!! )
and Enter You...who can forget that Tori Spelling number ? with her tap dancing..

and of course Coco should be played by Coco herself ... I love you Ms . Coco !!!

Como Te Gusta Mi Pinga?

Now if THAT isn't the most fun you could have on stage, I don't know what is!

HAHA!

jaystarr - Beautiful Thing was actually a play before the film. But I think it would make a wonderful musical.

"Como Te Gusta Mi Pinga?" is hysterical. It was my favorite part of the whole movie. I could see this working on stage as a musical. It would just have to improve upon the material instead of worsening it.

jaystarr - I didn't realize it was originally a play until a friend of mine did the show years ago. Beautiful Thing is still the best coming-out movie I've ever seen.

Eh. Maybe at New World Stages.

I hear ya. They have to improve it on stage, but still retain some of the songs
like.. Enter You, Como Te Gusta Mi Pinga, Trick of Fate, I am Woman ! , Dreamweaver, Drama.....and write new songs..

Since we are already in this subject.. here's my subjuntive list of possible actors playing the part:

Michael Arden as Gabriel ( the gay composer)
Cheyenne Jackson as Mark Miranda (the go-go boy) - he might be too tall though

probably Mario Lopez will be perfect for Mark Miranda as the go-go boy (since he expressed that he wanted to be on Broadway) but no singing part, he can just remove his shirt and dance !!! PERFECT !!!

Katherine Lamberg - ???? (Tori Spelling Role)- no idea
Brooks Ashmankas as Perry (the Como te gusta guy )
Coco Peru- Coco Peru
Roomate - no idea ?
Bra-less Rommate's GF- no idea?

I think Donna Vivino would be hysterical in the Spelling role.

The only thing I don't understand is why it would have to be campy. I think it could be sweet and funny and honest. And the Coco monologue (the highpoint of the film) should absolutely be an aria. Ok...a little camp. But just a little.

mmm... the original songs should stay but there's no need for "Trick of Fate", "I am Woman!", "Dreamweaver" etc. to be in the musical in my opinion. Updated On: 6/7/07 at 04:46 PM

I haven't seen Trick in years (maybe I'll watch it tonight), but I just remember the go-go boy character being totally dismissive and unlikeable. I didn't understand why the composer was so obsessed with him other than in a shallow way.

Well...ok. But a musical?

I'm sorry...but I'm a bit over the campfest that musicals have become. Why is it that musical comedies are now campfests and musicals with genuine, non-ironic emotions are soooo serious that they're a snooze (no...not all...but still).

Can't we have something sweet and honest and still funny with just a touch of camp? This project would be perfect for that.

OH...and one MAJOR problem I had with the movie. If ENTER YOU was a substandard song because he never experienced love, then he should have started singing a completely different song at the end of the movie to, ya know, show growth.

Robbie, I always thought the fact that he sang Enter You at the end of the movie WAS growth. He wrote the song blindly, having never experienced what he was trying to say, expressing what he thought it would be like. By the end of the movie, though, he has experienced those feelings. The song goes from what he wants and hopes for to what he's actually feeling. I always thought that was a cute twist.

EDIT: I do agree with you on the "camp" factor of Broadway. Can't we have a charming musical comedy without MAKING FUN of Broadway and breaking the 4th wall? Updated On: 6/7/07 at 04:58 PM
