Some underrated scores are, in my opinion, as follows:
1. Grind
2. Drat The Cat
3. Sideshow
4. Hallelujah, Baby
5. Her First Roman
6. Hallelujah, Baby,

I'd only question the inclusion of HER FIRST ROMAN. But to each his own.
I'm particularly fond of DARLING OF THE DAY, which I'd toss into consideration.

Posted: 6/29/03 at 1:45pmI think the only thing "under-rated" about MACK & MABEL is the book. Most who comment on the show and almost all reviews of it applaud the score. Some think it is Herman's best one. I find only "When Mabel Walks Into the Room" to be a low-light (too "Mame" and "Hello Dolly"). There are some anecdotes that suggest it also Herman's favorite of his scores, but I have heard that about many of his shows. Perhaps he views them like children and they are all his "special ones" *grin*.

Side Show has one of the best scores... the musics beautiful. I wouldn't say its totally underrated, though. "Who Will Love Me As I Am" and "I Will Never Leave You" got some hype. :) I know people who don't even know what Side Show is about, or the name of the show, and have heard one/both of the songs.
They are perty, aren't they? Hrm.
Note: I had to edit this... apparently I wrote "Show Show"... yes, I'm running on... zero sleep. Nap time, anyone? :-

Parade is up there on my list with Side Show. Those are my two favorite musicals that suffered the same fate. You think in this day and age, people would be more accepting of controversal plots, especially those based on historical events/icons. *sigh*
I think one has to possess a lot of depth to truly appreciate works like Side Show and Parade. They're so moving and you can totally connect to them, yet they make you think and bring up topics that are so touchy (prejudice being the main one). *sigh* I so wish both had been given longer runs and people had been more open minded.
Not to mention the music in both is just incredible. Love Krieger and JRB.
